Question about mud performance...
« on: September 18, 2009, 01:27:20 PM »
Most of my offroading is done on a lakebed in the winter time. Its a pretty flat, yet vast stretch of very soft mud and sand. No crazy hill climbing or anything, just trying to keep from sinking in the mud. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm thinking to get maximum resistance to sinking, I need to get the widest tire possible. I know larger diameter tires are good for getting ground clearance, but wouldn't the width of the tires be most important as to give a larger surface area?

And if I'm thinking correctly, what options do I have for wider tires? Do I need to get something other than my stock 95 tracker rims?

Thanks for your help.

if you put a really wide tire on a stock tracker rim it's not going to give you the foot print. You'll need some offset and if you are running bigger tires you'll probably need some lift.

I've been running zukes for years and 31X12.5 boggers got me into and out of alot of places but nothing will pass everywhere and everything can get stuck. Get some recovery gear and go wheeling. Wheeling with other rigs is always recommended until you get alot of experience.

It's taken me years to get the experience to go wheeling safely on my own. I really don't like to bring a crowd and end up having to repair the other rigs on the trail.

Thanks zookimoo

I've always wondered about offset. I can see it giving you a wider stance for rollover protection, but I cant see how the tires being farther apart can improve the resistance of sinking in mud.

15x8 with 31x12.50 or 15x7 with 34x10.50 (LTB'S)

Back in the day, (02-04) I had a tracker with 3" BL and 2" Coil spacers and ran 31x12.50 LTB's. for in the mud, But then i broke down and bought the Calmini 3" susp and ran some 34x10.50 LTB's and was Awesome ,
