CV axle replacement
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:57:23 PM »
Heya I read somewhere, usually in threads about the widening mods, that you can pull the CV axle out through the hub...meaning you don't even have to take the tire off, you remove your hub, and can replace the axle on the trail just through the hub opening.  Is this true?  And how do you do it?
I have torn CV boots and am going to replace both axles since it is the better, cost-effective option (plus NAPA lifetime CV warranty).
But all I've read about so far (in Geo FSM) is to basically tear down the front suspension 100% just to remove the axleshafts.
I'm looking for an easier way to do this.  Limited on time, have to get this done ASAP or else the Tracker sits this weekend.
Has anyone pulled the axle out through the wheel?  Or done anything that does NOT involve taking all the suspension apart?

I'm pretty pissed...that I have to do this much work for a simple piece of old rubber...and don't like the little clamp-on boots...and don't like paying other people to do stuff I am able to do, no matter how short I am on time...
Any help is appreciated, thanks

The widening allowing it to be pulled out through the back of the hum only works if you are running drivers side(US) shafts on both sides. Then you remove your lock out hub, C clip, take off your three bolts from the flange, turn your wheel hard to one side and pull it out of the back of the hub. Running the stock passenger side (US) shafts you still need to drop the suspension loose.

Oh I see, so it is still pulled through the interior side of the hub, not out through the front...it's just that the 3-bolt flange allows for greater flexibility to remove the axleshaft whereas the OE pass side (US) axle needs to be pulled out the conventional way.  Gotcha.  That clears things up a bit
