1.8 to 2.0 or 2.3 swap questions...
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:26:20 AM »
I know the mechanical aspects are the same. It is a bolt-in swap.

But, herein lies my question. I have a 97 Sidekick Sport that just seriously overheated. I plan on replacing the engine with either a 2.0 out of a Vitara or Tracker or bothering to find a 2.3 from an Aerio and converting it over to use.

What issues will I run across with the electronic programming aspect of the original Sport computer? Will it be smart enough to be able to accommodate the 2.0 or 2.3? or do I need to have the computer reprogrammed right away? I'm hoping I can get away with it for the short term without having to worry about running too lean and dealing with that mess...

Does anyone know these systems well enough to give me a solid answer? I would of course prefer the 2.3, it is about the same price to deal with as the 2.0...

 Thanks...

The general consensus is that a 1.8 system will support a 2.0 with no problem, I don't know about how it will handle a 2.3 though. HTH

I found out from the local Suzuki dealership today that the computer can be reflashed to be able to cope with the larger displacements just fine and relatively inexpensively... Like to the tune of $150... So that looks like that will be my option...

Same hardware, different software - man that's nice to know - maybe I should start looking for a J23.

No kidding.  You will have to swap the oil pans and pickup, I remember that from reading about 2.0 swaps on 1.6L Trackers.

Oil pan and pickups are only different if you use a car 1.8, 2.0, or 2.3 in the Track-kick...

Oh yea, I should have mentioned that I was talking about going from the 1.8 to the 2.3 from the cars.  :P
