Why Idiots  Shouldn't Tow Samis !!! Help!!
« on: July 04, 2005, 03:45:04 AM »
The idiot, of course, is me.

I"ve pulled my '87 Samuari JT dozens of times for many, many uneventful miles. That stopped today.

Picking my motorhome up from the shop, I hitched the Sami like I always have...transfer case in neutral, shifter in 2nd, & towed it home fat, dumb & happy. Arriving home, 12 miles later, I found the transfer case very warm to the touch and welded absolutely solid. I can't move it to any gear. Engine runs great, but the shifter is useless.  Letting the clutch out in any gear and I hear a tattering sound of gears almost touching.

The only explanation, of course, is that I towed it in either 2WD or 4WD. Ergo, the idiot.

Anyone have any idea as to just how much this is gonna cost???

Thanks

Sammi t-cases aren't too horribly expensive. I picked mine up for a little over 100, w/ the shifter.

I would pull the case and tear it apart, see what you got. I'm thinkin if you would have really welded that case to itself you wouldn't have been able to touch it. as far as the tranny goes, I can't help with that. I'd say, get the t0case workin, and then see if the tranny will work...

I see sami tranies and tcases going for 1 to 2 bills each all the time, but i seccond tearing them down and finding out what is wrong first, could just be a bearing or sleve out of alignment

All things must start and end, the key is to not let them start and end in the same place.

This is a old post so it may be too late.
I had my x-fer case get stuck after towing and it turned out to be the rubber bushing below the ball on the shifter. The rubber had gotten hard and cracked with age and it fell apart, allowing the shifter to fall below the rods and the case to be stuck between gears. I simply pulled the boot, popped out the shifter, aligned the shift rods with a heavy screw driver and replaced the bushing. Put it back together and it works fine!

I was backing out of the shop last week and popped the t-case lever from 4lo towards 4high and as soon as it landed in the neutral position it locked solid.

I've been zukin for over 10 years and have never had a stick lock-up. I popped out the t-case lever and took a pry bar and moved both bars. I replaced the lever and it worked fine. The parts on the shifter looked fine. I've ordered the plastic parts and will replace them when I ge the n ew ones. I loaded the tools to be able to take this apart on the trail.
