drive shaft spacer?
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:40:55 AM »
i've been wondering about this for a couple of seasons, and have had no apparent problems, but....
i used jeff's spacers for a 2" lift, and the rear drive shaft seems to be pulled out of the transfer case |removethispart||removethispart|@ 1 1/2" at rest, 1 3/4" when i lift the frame enough to lift a rear wheel, |removethispart||removethispart|@1 1/4" when i jack the wheel up.
it seems i should add a spacer to the shaft(at diff. end) to compensate for the lift?
any thoughts?
richard

well you have to think about when it flexes up into the body you need room for the driveshaft to slip in also.

i just picked up a 12mm driveshaft spacer, will be running 1.5inch bumpstop  spacers to prevent the shaft from going in to far on uptravel and also get rid of my tire rub..  running closer to 3inch rear lift.

right
i should have paid more attention to how it was before i put those pucks in the springs.
after i did the project i realized the shaft must have pulled out some. at rest i'm looking at |removethispart|@ 1/4" gap between the tail of the t/c case and that shield on the d.shaft- i see bare shaft(nice and polished)

it hasn't dropped out on me(i get pretty good flex), i've just been curious and wondered if others had dealt w/this?

there's a bit more to it than just dropping the shaft, with the shaft extended outwards so far from the back of the tranny there's a lot of potential for dirt to get caught up in there and ruin the seals also...  i can tell you that in my experience with the mustang rear shocks that u won't be dropping the shaft but will see that it extends it out a good bit.  but it would be nice to hear from the guys running the long f150 shocks, u guys running driveline spacers??  i'm about to put cavalier shocks on mine, they're about 1.5inches longer than the mustangs then the bumpstop extensions and picked up a 12mm driveline spacer, not sure if i will need it or not.

it bothers me that the shield thing seems more like a dirt catcher.
i did drop the bump stops a little, but just by washering the nub.
i haven't felt the shocks bottom out(?) but suspect they would before hitting the stop.
suppose i'd have to remove the springs to really see. hmmm.....i guess that would also show me what that drive shaft could do.
gotta run planned in a couple of weeks. i'll have to think about it after that.

what's with the [remove this part]? looks dumb.

The forum software automatically inserts that when ever it sees the "at" symbol (see below), as it would appear in an email address, in an attempt to prevent automated email address harvesting, it's a way to reduce spam.

When I had my first SOA zuke, the zukimoo, I jumped the front and when I landed the the front shaft had almost pulled out. When the zuke landed it jammed the shaft back in and took out all the splines. I needed a new shaft and got an extra inch put into the shaft. This is before you could buy spacers really cheap.
