need opinions
« on: April 04, 2009, 06:27:22 PM »
the tracker isnt doing so well the mileage keeps climbing as does the amount of oil i go through in a week, it burns close to 2 quarts a week. i was at the local wreckin yard today, and found 2 parts/donor vehicles one an 89 tracker lsi 2 door w/ an 8 valve 93k and an auto, and a 96 4 door w/ the 16 valve  113k and an auto. ive heard 16 valve swaps require some wiring/splcing an stuff so im thinkin about sin the 89 8 valve, i already yanked the rear seats out of it, might get the matching fronts to. this should be a drop in right? if it runs well whats a good price so i got somthin to work with? also my 93 has a 5 speed id like to keep it a manual, so i will just need to bolt a flywheel and clutch to it i think. im just stressin thinkin this might be the best way for me to keep this thing goin on the cheap, cause i recently found out im gonna be a father, so theres gonna be added expenses and i think ited be more cost effective to drop this engine and just roll with it. any suggestions on how to keep this thing alive so i dont have to go by another dud beater would be great to, thanks.

take some compression tests of the engine if you can... or if the wrecking yard can do a leak down test for you it would be even better...

if not a simple engine rebuild/freshen up wouldnt hurt to do to it before throwing it in the truck...

ive got 311,000km on mine (194000miles) and its been leaking some oil, been looking at getting it fixed for 600 bucks or grabbing another motor and throwing a rebuild kit in it and swapping them.

well i just got back from a swap meet and the tracker made the 200 mile round trip with zero problems cept the a/c compressor seized and broke the belt off on the way way out, no big deal though. but what im gettin at is i bought a very very clean 87 monte carlo ls for next to nothing, to the tune of 650 bucks and the best part is, if anything goes wrong i already have the parts from other g body platform cars ive owned, if my brother decides to buy the tracker ill turn him on to the site, i just weighed out costs and etc in my head while looking at the car and couldnt pass it up.

Sounds like a good deal on the Monte, love that car!

Seeing as how you're moving away from the tracker, would you consider selling the hard top?

i ould sell the hard top but i think my brothers gonna buy the whole thing off me to drive till he finishes his el camino up. plus the rear hard top is the only good part the front over head needs to be held on with a ratchet strap, it doesnt lock down. and get me wrong guys id love to keep it purely as a toy, but its just not in cards right now i gotta finish my girl friends grand prix and get outta my parents house with this kid on the way so life has kind spiraled in a crazy way. hegemon i think your the guy that was local in nm, if so are you the guy that has the one that is in town with the soft top and mud terrains? if so its lookin good. and if your lookin for parts take a look up at new milford auto wreckin, theres no hard tops up there though, just a 4 door and a tin top tracker. thanks

actually its a bone stuck ls grandma lookin car with a mint interior, near no rust on the body an untouched 305 lg4 and 200r4, its a very clean very nice driver. im not crazy bout the super light blue paint but that could change. oh and its got a blown brake line, needs a battery, tires and has a dent in the fender but other than that shes cherry, this will be my 4th or 5 th g body, its cleanest ive ever owned.

Yep I'm a nm local, I've got the green tracker soft top.  I think I'm the only person in the area that's with a lift.

How are the people at new milford auto wreckin, do they let you walk around.

I'd still be interested in the hard top if it's fixable.  Even if you brother wants to sell after he buys it from you.

16V requires a bit more work, but it's worth it.

they are great up there, almost every vehicle ive owned has had parts from there on it, most of em went right back there to when it just became to much work to keep em going. they do let you walk around, you just give an idea on what your lookin for and they let you roam, just check in at the office when you get there and leave and be polite and theyll treat you well
