How to remove 3rd member
« on: March 19, 2009, 03:26:04 PM »
Can anyone tell me how to pull the 3rd member from a 1995 tracker front end. Got the assembly off. Right axle pulls out. Left axle is in long tubewith axle in it and bolts to the c/v axle on left.  How does this come out to pull 3rd member?  Thanks Ern

You can whack it ( the flange end) with a large hammer from the back side to free it, or use a slide hammer, preferred method. Once the axle comes out,  and you have all the bolts removed, you'll probably have to use a case spreader or a clean chisel to separate the third from the case. They are glued in extremely well at the factory from my personal experience.

Yeah, whacking with a hammer, dead blow, rubber mallet.  Wooden block helps.

Knive helps a bit cutting through the glue.  Tough part.

Using a REAL thin screwdriver works to "break" the case open too.

Once you get the long axle out (and have the bolts out that hold the third into the housing), roll the axle housing over so the pinion is pointing straight up, hold onto the pinion flange with your hand and hold over on the pinion flange so the end of the long tube of the axle housing is off the ground a couple of inches, smack the long tube of the axle housing with either a block of wood or a dead blow hammer, the third will pop loose from the housing.........I've pulled several thirds by using this method, they aren't stuck as hard as you would think.
