Was kinda surprised when I got a letter from Suzuki of America today.  Basically says there may be issues with the front crossmember the front A arms tie into due to rust and them not setting it up right and blah blah.  Contact your local dealer for an inspection and replacement will be done if necessary...blah blah blah.

I can scan it if anyone needs it.  Good to see Suzuki finally owning up to it as Chevy did this with the Trackers a few years ago.

I would like to see the letter please and thank you.....and what you mean owning up to the trackers??? I own a 2000 chevy tracker what has been recalled so to speak?

The front crossmember underneath the radiator that the front of the A arms mount to has rusting issues.  They didn't do a good enough job of rust proofing them.  They've failed in the past, a member on here this problem several years ago.  Not a big deal if you don't live in the rust belt but definitely a problem for those of us who coat them in road salt every winter.

Chevrolet issued an inspection order a few years ago dealing with this.  Suzuki did not until now apparently.

Wow, I had to replace mine on my 2000 Tracker about a year or so ago, it was not pretty when it went.  My 01 XL-7 seems to be fine, it's in better shape than the one on my Tracker, I"M going to have to look into this.  Thanks for the info.  Dave

Was JUST telling 90camo about this very Tracker issue and about the letter GM sent out to Tracker owners on this yesterday!!   The deal on the GM recall was they (GM) would replace the front cross member on any 2 Gen (99-04) Chevrolet Trackers for 10 years or 150K miles... which ever came first.  The repair was good for whomever owned the Tracker.  GM tracked me down on the 2000 Tracker i owned, but i had sold it a year earlier.  Still... it applies to all Chevrolet Tracker owners.  There were about three forum members who experienced this exact problem on their Trackers just about one year ago.  I know the GM dealer took care of at least two of them.  Don't recall what happened on the third.  If GM keeps going down I'm not sure these repair statement agreements will be worth much though.   Class action law suits only benefit the lawyers.  They appear to love 'em.

When mine first went, no Chevy dealer would help me, they all said I was on my own.  At the time there was no recall.  I wrote the NHTSA about what happened to me, and I suppose I wasn't the only one.  A couple of months laterafter the repair I was contacted by GM about the recall.  I had to submit the bill from the repair and a copy of the vehicle regestraion, etc.  and milage.  And they paid pretty quickly.
     You've got to remember, GM doesn't want to lose any customers, they are hoping you will come back to trade up for a new vehicle some day.  To me my Tracker is unreplaceable.  I bought it because it had a full frame around it and a true Transfer case with a low range.  A 4 cyl with a 5 speed, for milage.  GM doesn't have anything like my Tracker anymore.
     As a side note, Toyota sent out a form to pickup owners about rusting frames, I know a couple of guys that had a problem, and Toyaota WAY MORE than took care of them.  One guy bought a brand new p/u ext. cab 4WD 4 cyl. 5 speed, real nice.    Just my .02

Edit: upon more investigating into this.......it seems that this particular issue (for 2000 chevy trackers anyway) was closed on October 30th 2007......they said its not a safety concern (even though you could loose steering but they consider it to not be a safety hazard :S ).....and not a defect but an engineering problem....whatever lol any excuse to not take responsibilty they can make i guess

I'm thinkiing with the typical turn-over of personnel and the differing management policies from dealership to dealership (customer friendly versus customer not friendly) there is a wide degree of knowledge, attitude, and responsiveness from dealers.   Anyone will recieve a better response from service managers by making a copy of the recall notice from GM and showing it to them.  To deny this corporate brand authorized repair is WAY above the service manager's pay grade.   Now, for sure,  there may be a couple service managers out there who aren't smart enough to realize this minor point, but it doesn't change the facts.

The recall is based on (I am quite sure) GM's corporate legal counsel telling the board that if they don't address this defect issue through good will this issue will/would very  likely cause GM MUCH more in legal fees and fines in a class action law suit than addressing the 100 to 200 repairs as they occur and are reported. 

Yepper, I got nowhere with the stealerships.  I simply dealt with GM direct and a garage did the work for me.  They did a better job than the dealer would have anyway.
