Eastwood v.s. Chicago Electric
« on: August 24, 2004, 05:25:08 AM »
My wife bought me a powdercoating kit for my birthday. I showed her the one from Eastwood (http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=412&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=10198) but she thought she found a better one. It showed up yesterday and it was a Chicago Electric kit. The package had more powders and accessories included so it the price didn't give it away.

Now, I'll buy Harbor Freight stuff, but not usually things that I expect to last or something I want real quality out of. If I'm going to powdercoat, I want to do it well.

So my dillema is, do I hurt her feelings and send it back or do I give it a shot?

Has anybody got any experience with either of these kits? Or, any stories about satisfaction with Eastwood products?

I bought a racatac (http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&itemID=2168&keyword=racatac) for work and I've been very happy with the quality but it doesn't use any power so I'm not sure it is enough to be sure that the Eastwood kit will be any better than the CE.

Well maybe No one else has one. But remember. At Harbor Freight: You get what you pay for.
So, Good luck and let us guys know how it works.

And for the little lady. Just let her know your trying to save her some money.
Must women don't know about buying any type of tools. If they get close to what you wanted just tell them Thank-you and ask if it would hurt their fellings if you exchanged it for one you would use.

Then Run really fast ;)

My wife was a maintenance technician when we got married (would be still if not for twins to take care of).  She understands the Harbor Frieght dillema.  The website mentioned it was Chicago Electric at the very top and she didn't connect it with HF.  It's just that she really tried to get the best unit she could in that price range.

I have found a guy at work with the Eastwood unit and another guy with the CE unit.  It seems that the CE unit performs just as well as the Eastwood.  And the Eastwood owner says the mounting for the powder cup was flimsy and it broke.  He had to glue it and smother it with silicone to get it to stop leaking powder.

On another board, the only response was from a CE owner and he said that he was very happy with it.

I'm going to try out the CE as soon as I get the 220 outlet setup for my oven.  I'll report back.

Use the CE, if it turns out to be a turd, you
can return it and try to get a better one or
a replacement if it's just a bad part.

For the most part, I'm happy with my Harbor
Freight CE tools, heck a $15 4" grinder that
I ran the crap out of and it still works like a
champ, if and when it breaks I won't shead
a tear, I'll just go get another one  :)

Be happy, my wife would whine a complain
about my buying somthing like that, and yours
gave you a gift  ;D  I think there are a few jellous
guys on this board that wish their wives were as
generous when it comes to the big boy toys

My wife came into my office about two months ago and said, "If we had a welder and a tubing bender, I could make furniture."

I bought the welder and am budgeting for the tubing bender.

If I could just get her over the fear of four wheeling, she'd be perfect (or darn close).
