changing gears for daily driver ring and pinion or transfer case?

stocker 1990 geo sidekcik.
with stock 215/75/15 tires I turn 3500 rpm doing 65mph.
I need to get that down to 1800-2200 rpm for my vw diesel swap.
I am looking at a 3" lift and some slightly larger tires.
To lower rpms should I change front0rear diff or t-case?
Not a rock crawler, maybe some putting in the desert but nothing extreme.
Can you give a newbies some ideas for a safe 3" lift (OME?)
and place for gears?

My advice would be to do the lift and add the tires first, then see where the rpm's are at. Due to the wheeling you describe, I would use Jeff's spacers and maybe some fender trimming or a body lift. 31" tires will probably put you in the rpm range you are talking about. If not you might use a set of ring and pinions from an auto trans kick(4.67). Not sure on the year, but someone knows. I think these are the highest(numerically lowest) gears out there. Hope this helps...

Your design should revolve around the tires. Everything else (lift, gearing, etc) revolves around the tires you want to run (which revolves around the type of wheeling you want to do).

Ok, lift and tires first, see where I am rpm-wise.
The rims are 5X139.7 or 5X5.5 right?
Looks like standard toyota dodge pattern.
If that is the case I would like to find some takeoffs a toyota or dodge durango or something.
So I can run 31" with 3" lift and spacers......???

You need rims off of a Ford - Toyota and Dodge are 6 bolt. Early 90's F150 wheels work good and can usually be found for a good price at a wrecker. If you want to fit 31's without cutting fenders and such you would be better off with 4" of lift.

when you say spacers do you mean wheel spacers or yoke spacers?
