1994 Suzuki Samurai "check engine"
« on: August 31, 2004, 10:54:49 PM »
Howdy,
I managed to pick up a mint, 45,000 mile Samurai yesterday.  The only negative thing is the previous owner obviously got tired of it and stopped doing any maintenance the last few years of its life.  So the last oil change lasted 10,000 miles.  I guess it could be worse.  Other than that, it is like new!

I changed the engine oil and the spark plugs this evening after work.  I also removed the "ghetto fabulous" 16" polished rims and put back on the stock rims which also came with the Samurai.

The plugs made a noticeable difference because the other plugs were obviously original and worn out-15K miles past their service life.

I just got back from a test drive.  Everything was fine and dandy until I was about home.  Then the "check engine" light came on.  There was no decrease in power or performance though.  I know that the carbed Samurais have this come on at 60K, 90K etc.  Do the FI samurais have anything similar?  45K?

I also found some info on a webpage about the codes. Does this look right?

I just found out the trouble code is 51 which according to the website means EGR System & Recirculated Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor.

Anyone have a FSM for FI Samurai or a 8 valve TBI Sidekick?

Welcome to the board.  I'd give Hawk Suzuki a call |removethispart|@
1 888 SAMURAI.  They probably know what to do.

I have a '90 Tracker FSM.  What would you like to know?

Jerry,
I think I fixed the problem.  I found a toyota website that had a toyota EGR system layout which is identical to the suzuki one.  It explained that the sensor is a low temp sensor and the check engine light goes on because the EGR valve is open at too low of temperature (idle/low throttle).  The problem is a dirty EGR valve.

So I took off the EGR valve, cleaned it up (it was fairly dirty) with carb cleaner and reinstalled it.  The problem appears to be fixed (knock on wood).

Yeah, I knew it was something simple.  I just wasn't familiar with the FI setup but it is much much easier to troubleshoot/fix ??? >:( :-/ >:( than the older carbed Samurais.

Thanks for the welcome.  I've been on the ORC board since 1995 though!  This 1994 Samurai is Samurai #6!  As in, I own six right now.  5 of 6 those are running and driveable.   ;D

Yeah, I'm a Samurai junky. :P
