Hey, Dowry...
You go north out of Bridgeport on Hwy 128 into Nevada about 15 miles. After you get into Nevada you take the first turn off to the right after you go over the Walker River bridge. There's a big ranch there with a trail that goes up into the Sweetwater Mountains. It's a rought trail (about a 5-7) but goes all the way to the top, a distance of about 20 miles. Star City is your first plateau at about 9K feet. You can tell you're there by the diggings on the right and it's the only flat place in the last 10 miles. You can go farther up the mountain (11k) to Belfort where there are some old log cabins and a bunkhouse (1850's). It's a climb, but well worth it. Be on the lookout for bears, no kidding. All of the troublesome bears from Yosemite are dumped in that area by the California Fish and Game, nice guys. I'm usually on vacation at Mono Village Campground at Upper Twin Lakes in July or August (bears are a pain in the ass there, too). If you're in the area, give me a shout and we can do some ghost towning. ZO6 Gun
