Good day people!
Sorry if I sound like a 10 year old, but I am a little baffled. I just emptied out the oil from the pan and removed the filter on my '97 kick and the reading I get is that I have way too much oil in the engine. Could something be clogging the engine and blocking the oil from getting out? Also how many litres does a 1.8 4 dr. sport take?

No idea how much oil it takes, but leaky gaskets can allow coolant in, or you could have gas building up in it due to a leaking injector or something like that.  Does the oil smell like gas or coolant?

Just for clarification here...

1. You have removed the drain plug from the bottom of the pan and let the oil drain out.

B. You removed the oil filter.

III. You checked the dipstick and discovered that there is STILL oil in the oil pan?

If so, you have something blocking the drain hole because the dipstick measures the amount of oil in the oil pan.  It may be a piece of a gasket.  I hope.

Alternatively, do you mean that you changed the oil after draining and replacing the oil filter and found that the dipstick indicates that you have too much oil in the engine?

You may have splashed some oil on the dipstick while adding the new oil.  It is always a good practice to remove the dipstick, wipe it off then remove it again to get a distinct measurement of the oil level.

You may have indavertantly added too much oil to the crankcase.  Your owner's manual will tell you exactly how much oil to use.  If somsimply remove the drin plug and let a bit of oil drain out then check the dipstick.  Repeat until the oil level is correct

BE SURE TO TIGHTEN DOWN THE DRAIN PLUG VERY SNUGLY TO MAKE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT WORK IT'S WAY BACK OUT CAUSING CATASTOPHIC ENGINE FAILURE!

Rileysowner's comments generally apply when the engine has been run for a while after the oil change allowing gasoline to be pumped into the oil pan via a non-firing sparkplug (engine runs slightly rough) or the head gasket has developed a leak allowing pressureized coolant to seep into the oil.  The resulting contaimated will either smell like gasoline or have a creamy texture and look caused by coolant.

Generally speaking, an engine that sized should take 4 to 5 quarts - no more.

FSM states that it should take 7.4 imp pints or 8.9 US pints after draining and replacing the filter. You should run the engine for 3 mins after replacing the oil and then let it stand for another 3 minutes before checking the level.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that something is blocking the oil from getting out. I removed the drain plug and the filter and I kept getting on overflow reading on my dipstick.
I screwed up big time, I added 6 litres of oil to an engine that probably had another litre or so inside.
What would be my next step? How would I unblock my oil pan?

The first thing that I might suggest is poking a short screwdriver up through the drain hole to see if you can dislogde whatever is blocking the hole.  If you are lucky and get a piece of whatever it is to come out, you might be able to figure out what is causing the problem.

It could be that you have a big wad of sludge in the bottom of the pan as a result of infrequent oil changes or driving in very dusty conditions.  Knocking  the sludge blockage out followed by a series of very frequent oil and filter changes may be enough to clear out any remaining sludge.

I would NOT recommend any type of cleaning treatments at this point!  Those type of products act to thin out the oil in hopes of breaking loose the sludge. Some of these products tend to react badly with the rubber seals throughout the engine causing oil leaks.  It is far safer to use the SPECIFIED grade oil and filter in a succession of closely spaced oil changes (less than 1000 miles/2000 kM) to clean up the insides of the engine.

Ultimately, you must remove the oil pan to really find out what is happening.  Alternatively, you could remove the valve cover to check for sludge there.  If you find sludge caked on the non-moving parts, then there is most likely sludge in the oil pan too.
