Need muffler recommendations - however can't be too loud
« on: July 28, 2008, 04:21:40 AM »
Since we're keeping the wife's Suzuki I'm going to do some work on it I was putting off. One bit of this is a better breathing muffler. On our last Suzuki like it I put a Magnaflow muffler on it and there was a noticeable seat of the pants increase. Not a blower or turbo but definitely there. Amazing what some free breathing can do to a vehicle.
Only problem was it was a bit loud. I didn't mind it but the wife did and has forbade me from doing that to this one. Wouldn't want to deafen the dogs ya know.

Anyways, what's out there that isn't terribly loud but flows well? I'm thinking something along the lines of a Flowmaster 50 or 60 series for sound but not a fan of those. All the baffles don't help flow much..but then again anything would flow better than what we have.

Anyways, it's a 2.7L rev happy V6 so who's got recommendations?
Oh, no recommending Corsa or other high dollar mufflers as I can't afford that.

BTW, anyone know of any sites where you can hear a variety of exhausts? I used to go to ExhaustSoundClips but they seem to be dead.

I just went with 2-1/4" pipes, low-restriction catalyst, and generic muffler shop turbo muffler.  It doesn't really get intrusively loud until over 70mph, and even then isn't too bad.  And that's with the soft-top.

There's still a decent restriction at the y-pipe junction (sure wish someone would build a nice y-pipe), and these engines aren't very big, so you'd get diminishing return if you get much fancier than that.

I just put a flowmaster super 44 offroad on my 01 tracker 2.0L. Ordered it in 2-1/4" because I plan on redoing my whole exhaust eventually. It was tough deciding between a magnaflow, dynamax, or flowmaster, but in the end I had to go with the flowmaster sound and the offroad version of the S44 is diamond plate steel which was too cool to pass up. So far its definately louder than my quietflow that was on there, but I picked up a few ponies without losing too much low end torque. The 3 chamber flowmasters are pretty quiet, but also seem to be even more restrictive than their other stuff. Hope that helped at some level. If you want a sound clip pm me and i'll see what I can do.

I have a Borla with 2.25 pipe on my 2.0 ltr tracker. It is amazing. I actually noticed the power gain and it has a great sound. Deep but not obnoxiously deep and loud. Very nice sound.

I still prefer my Dynomax Super Turbo muffler!

I did roughly the same with my 2L convertable.  My wife was not impressed with what I had done to the 'family car'.  I ended up putting a 2nd smaller muffler as a resonator, about 23" long at the tail end between the rear wheel and the gas tank (but not too close ;)).  The guy at the shop said it would not make it quiter, but it Help from headache loud to low rumble loud.  My son likes it because it looks the same as the supped up Honda's.

I just put on a complete new exhaust on mine yesterday. I'm running a Doug Thorley header 2 1/4" exhaust pipe with a Cherry Bomb Turbo muffler(no cat) It sounds good and is not overly loud

Sounds like what I have on my Tracker...FAR to loud for her tastes.

Found the Aero Exhaust company but they're pretty new so I'm hesitant to spend what they want on a muffler.  Sound nice though.
