Transmission questions a'plenty
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:13:34 PM »
I have a 94 8v Tracker 4x4 and the front bearing is gone (whines like hell untill you push in the clutch).

First question, what would a over the counter rebuilt one of these run and where to look?

Second, how hard are these to drop, I can swap one out I think but I don't trust myself to rebuild it?

Third, the transmission has 110,000 miles on it so clutch, throughout bearing and pilot as well are due too.  Any one that has paid to have one rebuilt at a shop, what did ou pay ballpark?

Forth and final, Centerforce clutch, worth the money?  I was thinking about it before this and now that it is time is this worth the money?  I 4x4 often but I do not crawl, also I commute 100 miles a day.

Thank you in advance for the input.
Richard

rebuilding the manual tranny is not so bad. There have been several posts about people doing just that sucessfully, even first timers.Just have a clean place to work, keep track of everything as you go along, and take your time to avoid any mistakes.I sometimes take digital photos of the tranny as I go through the rebuilding process as a little extra insurance against boo boos.

Do yourself a favor and get the flywheel resurfaced. It was the reason I blew out three input shaft bearings in a truck I owned. The clutch chattered a bit/wollowed out the pilot bearing/destroyed the input shaft bearing. It cost me $35 to have it trued and the bearings were $175 each. Expensive mistake. Granted, that was not a Tracker, but drivetrain is drivetrain.
When something like a bearing fails, ask yourself, "why?"

Manual transmission work isn't too bad. Link kingzoo said, just keep track of everything. I, too, use the digital camera whenever I come across something that is tricky to get apart/together, or if bolts have to go back in a certain place due to length (more common on my dirtbikes!)

I thought about rebuilding it but I'm in the middle of a month long move and I commute to work.  If I had the time I would go by one from Pick n Pull and rebuild that but that is not real feasible right now.

i know that the center force is awful if you have stock gears, basicly it locks instantly you cant burn it its on or off real quick with lower gears your use to this feeling but on a daily driver its prolly not best, i would just pick up a premium clutch kit and change out all bearings and for sure have your plate turned or atleast looked at 110k is not all that much my sami had 230k before i switched to an automatic and the trans was still working great for the guy i sold it to
88' Zuk 16v efi full width dana 44 axles and 37"s,hybrid exo cage, comp cut rear -18", F&R fox air shocks , jegs poly seats, sk automatic trans, 6.5:1 t case, twinsticks, 100" wheelbase with a 79" wide.

Well that ends the clutch debate, I was leaning that way any how.  Any one have thoughts on cost/ places to buy a rebuilt tranny?
