Power Steering went out on me while I was exiting freeway!!!
« on: March 14, 2008, 05:30:33 PM »
just as the tittle says!  >:( i noticed a few days before, it was making a few squeeling noises here and there when i turn it to the end points, but now, it just went out! i almost crashed!!! thank god im alright! so now its time to fix!

i noticed that when im stoped, i looked at the pulley on the p.s. pump, when i turn the wheels, it of course stops! makes the squeeling noise because the belt is skipping! this means that its a bad steering pump right???? the cars has about 206k miles on it, the records of the vehicle (since i just recently baught) shows no change in the powering steering pump what so ever. and i have records of maintence back when this 92tintop tracker had only 48k miles on it!!!

any info that might help?

Tighten, or better yet replace the belt and see what happens

sure? because, when im in park, i turn the steering wheel, then i can see the pully on the pump lock up! also,  about the tightning the belt, i have ac, so the bolt to adjust is in the fixed hole on the power steering bracket

Is the pully locking up or is the belt just slipping on it?  If the belt is slipping, like wild said just tighten it.  The extra strain of running the pump is to much for the belt and it is just loosing traction.

Mine doesn't have ac but I would think the ps bracket is still similiar.  You adjust the tension of the power steering from underneath.  You have to climb underneath and rotat the pulley so that the slot allows you access to the bottom bolt.  Loosen it and stick a pry bar in there against something that wont break and put a little pressure on the pump rotating it towards the closest fender.  Hold pressure and crank down the bolt.  Also get a can of belt dressing and spray it lightly on the inside of the belt while the engine is running.  The dressing is sticky and will help keep the belt from slipping.

That being said I am not sure how you almost crashed when you lost power steering.  A good majority of these don't even have power steering and mine has been dead since I got it several months ago until I replaced the pump a couple of days ago.  Granted its nice at low speeds but anything over 5mph and there really isn't much of a difference.  These vehicles are so light they steer pretty easily on their own.

i would take the belt off see how the pully spins check the fluid and if the pully spins alright replace the belt
