Heat issues

I ran my samurai today for a couple minutes and when i pulled it back in to the shop it was smoking from under the hood. The rad was smoking and underneath the thermostat housing was smoking. I have a brand new water temp gauge but it never even moved off of zero probably a bad gauge but still dont know why it gets so hot. I took the rad cap off and there was no pressure in the rad at all. What could be the problem.

depressurization.

Check if coolant is on level.

if you bought a cheap thermostat it might not have an air release hole or a ball bearing or a Nick on the side of the valve or the hole could be plugged up but sounds like an air issue.

First step: put some coolant in and run it. Second step: look for the leak.

I put a new thermostat in with an air release hole and a new rad. I also put a new temp guage in. I ran it for a couple minutes there was no pressure when i removed rad cap and my temp guage never moved. The guage starts at 130 degrees so maybe it didn't get hot enough. The engine was smoking bad down by the alternator bracket but that could be coolant that spilled when changing thermostat.

Could be a bad water pump or just an air lock. Try running it without the rad cap on until the thermostat opens. If the water level goes down then then you had an air lock.
