Cummins to supply light-duty diesels to unnamed automaker

Cummins Inc., best known for powerful, long-lasting diesel engines used in semi-trucks, has signed a deal with an undisclosed automaker to provide diesel engines for light trucks.

The engines are expected to be launched in 2010. Cummins would not name the automaker or say how big the engine will be or how many cylinders it will have.

Cummins, of Columbus, Ind., now makes a 5.9-liter version of its inline six-cylinder for DaimlerChrysler's Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickup. The engine coming in 2010 is a new design.

Two likely customers for the new engine are Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co., neither of which have a diesel engine for their light trucks.

No decision has been made on where to build the new engine.

"Cummins is looking for a community that has a cost-competitive, suitable facility and the right resources available," said Jim Kelly, president of Cummins' engine business.

Cummins expects the new diesels to deliver a 30 percent fuel economy gain over the gasoline engines they replace.

Obviously written by someone that didn't bother to look outside of the US market.  Both have good small diesels for sale elsewhere. ::)

Thats exactly what I was thinking. They probally just signed a new contract with Dodge.  ::)

Rumor on the Titan forums is that the 3/4 ton Titan will get a V6 TD Cummins. ;)

I'd be happy with a 1/2 ton full size with a bombed 4bt Cummings. 

Should be 20+MPG easy and generate enough torque to overpower most factory 1/2ton drive trains.

It had better get 20+, I can pull 20 in my 1-ton Ford just driving around town.

Dodge has access to the awesome mercedes 5-cyl diesel from the sprinter van.  If it gets 30 mpg pulling a huge cargo van around it would kick in a smaller pick-up.

Which is once again why i think suzuki needs a small diesel from mercedes for its suv's

As said before, both Toyota and Nissan have excellent diesel engines, I think the largest they ever made for the european market was a 3 liter, for the Land Cruisers and the Nissan Patrol. Now Nissan has gone with the 2.5 liter used in the Navara and Pathfinder. The thing is they make their own diesel engines and they are large enough to engineer a larger engine if they think it's what they need.
Suzuki on the other hand doesn't make their own diesel engines, the 1st generation Vitara got diesel engines fron the PSA group (Citroën and Peugeot), as did the Grand Vitara. The new Grand Vitara gets its diesel engine from Reanault, as did the Samurai when it was on sale. The Jimny also uses Renault engines.
So Suzuki does make a good candidate to be the maker that recieves those engines ;D.
I'm sure you can get by with less than 5.9 liters?

I like the toyota hilux, especially the ones from the mid 90s. They combined the best of both worlds: a straight axle, a 3.0 turbo diesel(1kz-te), and some models have a 4 door cab, plus 25+ mpg as well ;D

Lets hope the unnamed is not Suzuki.
Suzuki could do much better with someone other than Cummins.
I'd rather see Suzuki design their own, use Mercedes or even Mercury though we know it'll never be Mercury because if it were Chevy would never re-badge it.  Well, then again, Chevy has put Mercury engines in their vehicles.

GM no longer has majority interest in Suzuki.  They sold the majority of their stakes in Suzuki last year.

We have Sprinters at work, I've put 200,000 miles on one of them. The best they get is 22mpg.
