Replacing head gasket... reuse the old head bolts?
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:30:03 PM »
I'm replacing the head on my samurai and one thing that has come up is if I need to replace the head bolts or not. If I DO need to replace them where is the best place to get them? Any info is helpful. Thanks

You should replace them as the bolts are torque to yield bolts. I did reuse the old bolts on my old Sami when I did a head job on it and I had no problems but I did not know they were not reusable. I also checked the torque a couple of times.

Is this true?
(I've yet to see a definitive resource)

Also, what about 1.6l engines (either 8v or 16v) ...

Ive heard that we are "supposed"to replace the bolts.  But Ive done a few motor rebuildings and I ve reused the bolts with success.  I always check the bolts for any strips..  If there's none, then ill use it.  If there is, Replace it.

The 16V engines are the only torque-to-yield bolts. The 8V engines use standard bolts. There is very little taper to them if you look at them closely. Torque-to-yield bolts have a noticeable taper to them.
