Swap out ok?
« on: January 28, 2008, 03:41:44 PM »
I have an engine (1.6L 8V) coming out of a 1991 Tracker/Sidekick(dont know which one) It has a 5speed manual 2wd tranny in it, Would that tranny bolt up to my transfercase in my 1987 Sammy that has a stock 1.3L and stock tranny? or do i need to buy the conversion that will let it bolt to my tranny? thanks everyone...

also would the engine mounts be the same? thanks!

Sammy's have a divorced transfer case, so you don't need to bolt the 1.6 2WD
trans to anything, but you need to mate the driveshaft between the two.

Now are you wanting to swap just the engine to a sammy trans or the whole thing trans and all
to the sammy??? you weren't clear on this. If you want a 1.6 in your sammy and retain the stock
1.3 tranny you need an adaptor, and motor mounts, as the 1.6 engine sits about 1" taller than
the 1.3 engine

I have the 2wd trans as well as the motor. I was just curious if i could swap that into my samurai without having to buy an adapter plate to mate my sammy tranny up to the 1.6 so i could just save some money. what mounts would i need as well? thanks!

The mounts are available from Gary at Petroworks, he has them made for swapping
1.6 into Sammy bodys

Swapping in the 2wd 'kick transmission is more pain than it is worth. You have driveline modification, transmission crossmember fabrication, transmission tunnel persuasion. In general there is little benefit. It is a stronger transmission, but not by a lot. The gearing is the same.
The flywheel is about an 1" larger diameter, 10 pounds heavier, with about 1/2" bigger clutch. Some benefit in that, but not necessarily worth the headache.
You are better off going through either Trailtough or Petroworks for your adaptor kit. Petroworks version sets the engine a little lower with completely new motor mounts and transmission mount bracket. Trailtough uses the stock Sammy mounts with adaptor brackets, but it is much cheaper and if your old mounts are good it's a better choice if you are planning on running an 8V 1.6.
