Lift Kit recommendation for 1999 Grand Vitara
« on: September 07, 2007, 07:58:27 AM »
Hi,

I am wanting to lift my 1999 Grand Vitara.  I see different vendors sell lift kits and that some people do a custom lift.  I am looking for a recommendation from a vendor, (turn-key).

Any advise greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

Sorta depends on how much height you want and what you want to do with the truck.

Old Man Emu's coil springs give the best ride but only about 1.5-2" worth of height.

Calmini and some other lesser known companies have taller kits but the ride is stiffer and not exactly worth the kidney abuse unless you want to really go wheeling.

Also depends on how tall of tires you want to run.

I do not know for sure, but a few guys have used my spacers on this generation Tracker. Since it fit the Trackers I assume they would fit your Vitara. I sell the 1.5" set for $75 and the 2" set for $90. That price includes shipping to US, add $5 for Canada.

Ajmblazer's right, it depnds what you want to do.  My dad wanted a little more off-road ability without much if any on-road compromise, so he's on OME 2" springs and shocks all around, and he fits BFG 235 MT's with only a little trimming at the front air dam and in the rear skirts (be sure to trim the plastic at the back of the rear doors before you flex very  much, or they will get "trimmed" for you!).  Only a little non-harmful rubbing results in the front wheel well liners, and the car looks MUUUUUUUUUUCH tougher.

Combined with a rear locker, he can go many more places now, while on-road he's only got a little more road noise, slightly worse mileage, and his speedo is off by 5-7%.  He's very happy with the package.

Dowry

I feel like I have the only truck without a lift and with 235s that doesnt rub at all. I was told I needed to lift mine but Im on my second set of MT tires and still far from rubbing anything.

Well...the Trackers don't have as much plastic crap around the wheel-wells as the Grand Vitaras.  Everywhere you look around the tires on a GV, there's something for them to rub on, particularly under compression.  It's frustrating....it would be nice if someone designed a complete body package that would eliminate most of the cladding.  I've already removed the rear integrated mudflaps, hacked away a lot of the front wheel-well plastic, and shaved some metal.  Still need to do more.  I don't think you could ever get anything larger than 31s under a GV without a 6" lift!!

We've got 29" tall 225/75R16's under our XL7 and they fit great.  No way could you fit anything else but these fit just fine.  They do rub the front plastic of the inner fender liner at max turn but it's just barely a rub and doesn't damage the plastic or the tires.

On our GV we had some retreaded 225/75R16's that were actually around 29.5" tall and they were too tall.  Rubbed in the rear when any weight was on the suspension, rubbed in the front while turning and compressing, etc etc etc.  Crap tires anyways...

I run 235/85x16 rubber with Calmini kit. Front bumper trimmed for turning - slight rubbing on rear of front well. Calmini arms move the ball joint ( stub axle assembly ) forward to realign castor.
Trimmed rear steel bumper bracket and bumper inner a wee bit. Fitted longer suspension arms that are 20mm longer than stock to push axle back= no rub in front of rear guard.
