gear oil in a samurai
« on: July 06, 2007, 02:58:46 PM »
I went to napa to pick pu some parts and see about the mystic gear oil. They didn't have any but suggested royal purple. I went to the bob the oil guy forum and couldn't find what I was looking for probably due to my lack of finesse on the computer. ::) ::)  My computer is messed up so I can't open my pdfs for my suzuki fsm.  >:( >:(

What's the capacity on the 1.3 5 speed transmission, transfercase, and rear diff.  Also, has anybody used the royal purple?

Royal purple is around $11.00 a qt and boasts stable temperatures with out getting extremely hot and breaking down like regular oils. It is full synthetic from what I understand. I found mystic at O'Reilys for around $4.00 a qt.

I know that these little transmissions and transfer cases get pretty hot and staying cooler could be a good thing.  :) :)  I had been putting lucas in but it still gets hot. If I could keep them cooler, Maybe they would be quieter and I wouldn't have the seep out the tops or the smell associated with them. but $11.00 a qt for royal purple? It better be everything it says it is and do everything it says it does.

Anyone? ??? ??? ???

I filled up my Transfer case with the GM equivalent and it seems to shift a little smoother.  That might just be in my head though.

As for the diffs, I use standard 80-90 weight from the parts store in the rear end with the spool.  For the front I run the GM brand oil as well in order to break in the new gears and keep the ARB in good shape.

What you are looking for is the Synthetic gear oils.   I have used Redline in the past, and it worked well.  I don't know enough to really say what the difference is between the oils but any of the high end synthetics should treat you pretty well.

I have been running low gears in a zuk for about five years, I have learned one thing about samurais they do not like royal purple or any other synthetic oil, also I have tryied lucas and stay lube and did not like them either, took them back out quick, went to mystic oil and never looked back, on the engine i went to a cheaper chevron oil because I change it alot about every one thousand miles and add a half a bottle of prolong every time or so and went to a napa nascar oil filter made by wix, and a I went to a ford 3.0 engine filter (larger) for like an 1989 ford taurus, have worked out great for years, the synthetic oil has no shock loading for off roading so your gears clash all the time (it's like gasoline in your gear boxes) it's so thin, and at 4 bucks a quart for mystic thats not bad, I use 1 qt in my x-fer case 1.5 abouts in my trans and about the same in my diffs, I buy 8 quarts and just dump them in my paint pot and a bottle of prolong for trans when I change out my fluids so i'm not real exact but prob. close but I can change them a couple of times with that.

So you're saying take about 8 quarts of mystic and mix in a 1 bottle of prolong all in 1 big bucket and then mix it all up and put the cancoxsion (or however it's spelled) right in the transmission, transfer case, and diffs straight out of the bucket? That will save me quite a bit over the royal purple. The attractive selling point for the royal purple was keeping the temps down in the gear cases. What does the prolong do and who sells it? Napa?

I just put 8 qt's in my paint pot because it is 2.5 gallon and a pain to put just a quart at a time in it, the trans prolong you can get from napa but you might have to special order it, I have been using it for almost twenty years or so, it was was in europe way befor the u.s. under a diffrent name,You can get the oil add for the engine along with the gas add for 25.00 from napa, I always get about 7 mpg more with it and don't have to worrie about running my engine dry on long hill climbs or going down long steep hills, I know the trans aditive works because I owened a ford tarus for years with the bad auto trans that they came with, put it in when I got the thing and even towed with it for years, sold it to a Friend and it is still running with close to 200k on it same trans, you don't need to dilute it as much I do I'm just cheap and don't think it needs to much anyway and don't like the looks of things foaming if you watched the vid's on Bob's site, have fun.

I ended up putting just mystic in right now but I was doing some research and found an interesting site on additives.

http://www.carbibles.com/additives.html

I think you can click on it the way I did it. I'm going to look further into the prolong (although I think I get info on it in my bulk but I'm afraid to open it)  ;D ;D ;D

All I saw was the engine stuff so I will see if they got the tranny stuff.  The Mystic I used was 80/90 since they didn't have the 75/90. Hopefully that will be o.k. I need to change my oil pan gasket so maybe I'll throw in some prolong when I change the oil.

Do you think it would hurt to add the prolong to the transmission now and have it a little over full? ???  Will the engine stuff work in the gear boxes or  is it cheaper to buy the transmission stuff? ???

You could put like a quarter of a bottle in the trans now it should not hurt anything, not to sure if the engine prolong is the same but I can't see it hurting anything in a non automatic trans, an automatic would be a whole diffrent animal, the stuff is spendy so you could put half a bottle in the engine and a quarter in the trans and another quarter in the x-fer case and do the same thing next time you change your fluids.

O.K. I found both the engine and transmission stuff at O'Reily's. Engine stuff was $19.99 but it didn't come with fuel system stuff. The transmission stuff was $19.99 I think. Oh, and the booster formula for the engine is around $11.99. (I guess that way they get $12.00 every time you change your oil) :o :o.  I put the whole pint in the engine with the oil change (I changed the oil pan gasket this morning while I was wrapping up the transmission swap and axle bearing change) so I'll see how it does :P :P. I also put half a bottle of the transmission stuff in the transmission through the gear shifter hole and I'll add the other half to the transfer case.

So far, on a 2 mile test drive, the transmission didn't whine but kind of sounded like the gears were dry. I have the shift location pin all the way in because that's how it already was. Maybe it's sending the vibration through the shifter? The big plastic bushing is worn out so I'll get the sloppy fix from rocky road outfitters that gives you both the transmission and transfer case repair kits for $30.00 + $13.52 for shipping combined. Unless there is a better deal out there? ??? ???

The transfer case shifter still vibrates in first and second gear so I don't know what that is. I have the same clutch and bearings. U-joints are all greasable so I'll grease them. I wonder if the wobble in the transfer case is related to the transfer case or something else. ??? ???

It's always something! >:D >:D

Just put the rig on four jack stands and fire it up, put it in gear and see what's going on underneath it, if you can get someone to give it some gas for you, the u joints should not be greaseable so maybe somebody bent something putting them in or got them out of sync or who knows?

My u-joints are all greaseable so I guess they're after-market. I'll stick it on stands and check it here in the next week or so.
