Hey guys, new member here. I have always wanted a Sammy, and am now at a point in my life where I can have one, and finally convinced the wife that we needed to park the Ford that we use for pulling our toy hauler, and get me one to drive back and forth to work, hunting, and to play in the big sand-box we live near. After well over a month of watching the state-wide classifieds, I finally found one and bought it. It is an '87 with a spring-over lift, 30" BFG all terrains, ARB Bumper, 6000lb Warn winch, WP safari rack(would like to know who this is so I can check weight capacity), CD player, and tow bar. This was mainly towed behind a motorhome, but it must have been painted since then. The whole front of the motor has just been gone through, and new seals and timing belt installed. Rebuilt transfer case. The only problems with it are the fuel gage sending unit needs replaced(on order as we speak), and the 4th gear syncro is out so you have to double-clutch 4th(rebuild kit, and new clutch showed up last night). I gave $3400 for her, and I think she was worth every penny. What do you guys think?

I think you got hoboed by about $1,400. HIGH RETAIL value is $2,300, and with a bad syncro it's not a "high retail" vehicle. Also, add-ons and modifications do not add to the value of a vehicle. Even if it were a hardtop $3,400 would be brain damage. I paid $800 for my '88 with no rust, new paint, new clutch, 2 tops, cd player, subwoofer, aftermarket wheels, and new 235/75/15 tires(plus it hasn't been pre-goobered by former owners messing with the suspension).

I on the other hand think you did good.

It's getting harder and harder to find Sammy's this day for under 2K in good condition.  With the after market parts and a good engine I don't think he did that bad.  Especially considering how clean the Sammy it is.

Heck, right now there is 1 Samurai below 2000 on Seattle Craigslist and it's a hard top with an engine in need of replacement.  There are good deals out there (My brother traded a stock sammy for a marine 460) but they are getting harder and harder to find.

Some lower gears would have been a nice touch though. 

If a magnet says that the body is as good as it looks then I reckon its worth paying the extra. Add ons might not add to the book value but if you were going to buy them anyway then you save a lot of money.

I think its a good find and not a horrible price.  It very true about the price of a sammi going way up.  When i bought mine, the guy wanted 2 grand.  It didnt run at the time, soft top was shot, inteior was demolished, and just a bunch of other stuff was wrong, but the body has no rust at all... talked him down to 1100

I kept my eye on craigs list for over a month along with the auto trader, and nothing came up, or had dead beat sellers. this one poped up, and I thought it was a good buy. It had everything I wanted, plus a little more. The body is in good shape. I forgot to mension, he threw in a bestop bikini top and a set of tire chains. This thing was a diamond compared to what people around here are trying to sell for $2500. There are a couple things I wish it had come with, but the pickins' are getting slim, and I can add the stuff I want myself. It is solid, and there are no major dents, so I think it's  a good base to build from. I bought a new black Bestop for it, a tranny rebuild kit, new clutch kit, CB, and I'm stripping the interior on Sunday to have a spray-in liner put in on Monday.

For as clean and in good a shape as that thing is, I have to agree with Rhinoman, and the others, Good Deal. Myself, I prefer driving something that doesn't look like it was salvaged from a wrecker. For some of us It's worth the extra $ for a CLEAN example of the thing we desire. You did Good, especially if YOU think so.
