Body Lift - Help Needed...
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:16:09 PM »
OK, here's the deal.  I just picked up a metal lathe last weekend and plan on using it to make a body lift for my Geo along with some other neat goodies for it as well.

For the body lift I plan on machining a stud that would screw on to the original body mount stud and then be extended with a male threaded portion on the bottom for a nut to secure the body mount bushing in place to the frame mount.  There would be a UHMW spacer about 2" in diameter that would provide the support between the body and the frame mount.  Now for the help that I need.

I need some measurements if any one would be kind enough to help.  What I'm looking for is the overall length of the body mount stud, the diameter of the stud at the top where it is attached to the body, the diameter of the stud at the bottom above the threaded portion, and the length of the threaded portion of the body stud.

I guess I could take the time and disassemble my rig to get the needed measurements, but if some one had a tub off of a frame and grabed these basic measurements then I could start figuring out the design.

As far as cost of the body lift goes I pulled the following prices out of my newest ENCO catalog tonight:

4 feet of 2" diameter UHMW Rod           $22.32
or
4 feet of 2-1/2" diameter UHMW rod     $35.47

3 feet of 1" diameter W1 drill rod          $21.40
or
3 feet of 1" diameter O1 drill rod          $28.43

I guess I'll need to know the diameter of the stock body mounts so that I can decide which diameter of the UHMW rod to get.

I'm looking forward to the challenge of this project and can't wait to get started.

Let me know what you guys think.

Mike

Well this project is starting up again.

I've been waiting on some tooling for the lathe but now it's here.  I got the UHMW for the blocks last week and promptly cut the 2" diameter rod into 3" tall sections.  Today the drill chuck and MT2 adapter for the lathe tailstock arrived, so I drilled a 1/2" hole through each of the lift blocks.
I also picked up some 7/8" hex PTO shaft.  The plan is to turn sections of the PTO into long coupling nuts, instead of the stud extenders, with a hex head so I can tighten it down.

Sure is nice to have a little more tooling and expand what I can do with the lathe.  I'm not sure how long this will take me to complete but I'll post progress from time to time.  Enjoy the pictures!!

Nice work so far, lookin' forward to see the finished product. Machine tools are a wonderful thing.
