HID conversion
« on: June 10, 2007, 01:35:47 PM »
hey guys whats going on??

well to get to the point, i have a 99 grand vitara and i am going to do an 8000k HID conversion on it.  i have done one before on my friend's sentra, but never on my car.  i am just wondering which wire is which on the headlights.  from what i can remember theres highbeams, positive, and negative and as some of you know by the simplicity (sarcastic) of the GV wireing its not really self explanatory.  i need to definatelly know which wire controlls the highs since i am also setting up my piaas to act with the high beams and with the switch.

here is the thing, i have no way of testing the voltage and i really dont want to do "cut and see if it works" method.

if anyone has any experiance with the conversion i would apreciate it, or if anyone knows which wire does what on the headlight it would really help!!

thanks guys!!

As no-one else has posted, this is the data for Japan-built vehicles for the European market.  The design should be the same as Canada-built, but you folks do have different headlamps fitted (why?), so no guarantee:

White/red stripe is the wire from the fuse, with +12V, always connected to the headlamp filaments.

Red/no stripe is the wire from the Hi-beam filament to the headlamp switch, which provides a ground when you switch it on.

Red/white stripe is the wire from the Lo-beam filament to the headlamp switch, which provides a ground when you switch it on.

I hope that explains it clearly.  Some folks are wed to the notion that the switch has to be in the +ve line - it isn't for headlamps.

nope, the wires are not the same, so if anyone has a US model GV i would need that....the wires for mine are white and red with blue stripe, red with blue stripe, and yellow as far as i can tell, mine might be a little dirty but i think you guys get the general scheme...

According to the Mitchell Repair manual, which is for N.Am. models, the +ve supply is White/blue stripe, the other two wires are the same as I said.  As yours are not, do this:

With the ignition on, apply a ground to each of the other wires in turn, and see which beam comes on.  Problem solved.

well i got my kit and put it in, it was actually a lot easier than last time when i did my friend's car since mine came with a harness that plugged right into the H4 plug, however i also managed to figure out what is what

as you look from the top you have yellow on far right and other 2 are red with i belive red/white being on far left.  from left to right it goes, high beam than low than yellow being ground...

thanks for your help dough!!

Did you use the stock housings? Retrofit any projectors? How's the cutoff? Beam pattern?

the HID conversion is by far the simplest modification i did on my car!!! the kit comes with everything you need, and it comes also with a handy H4 harness that literally plugs right into the H4 connector that bulbs would normally plug into.  you need to make a little bigger oppening on the dust cap fro all the wires to go through and rest is all plug and play.  i didnt sodder, splice, or modify anytihng other than the dust cap.  the only thing i had to do is reposition some of the plugs to match the factory wireing (highs to highs, lows to lows, ground to ground) and that is basically it.  the whole thing with all the work took me less than half an hour.  yes the same housing was used because the bulb base is the H4 pattern.  no i did not do a projector because that would cost a lot and take longer, neither of which i want to do.  now since this car was not designed to take xenons the cutoff is a lot more crisp, but it could be better lol but i am verry happy with it.  the design gives a slight glare towards the right of the road helping iuminate the road signs, however i was not able to see the effects on oncoming traffic.

stay tuned and i will post some pics of it from drivers point of view at night, hopefully by tonight
