Anothe rstupid gear and tire question
« on: May 03, 2007, 05:38:45 PM »
I'm looking into building a sidekick.

I'd like to get a 96-98 4 door manual, possibly sport

I am putting yota axles under it via the Trail Tough kit

I will be running 5.71 gears

I'd like to run 33x10.50 tires

Is that low enough for those tires, would I be better with 31's...32's?

I want this thing to be as close to stock as far as the speedo and acceleration are concerned.

Any guess on what the real world mpg would be on something like that?

Thanks

I would imagine that would be an adequate setup. As far as the speedo goes, that may need to be re-calibrated. Some are cable-driven to the wheel, some from the transmission, and some are electronic. I'm not sure which it is on the OBDII Sidekick...

I spoke with Brent |removethispart|@ TT a while back. He said his kit will not work on the "Sport" model, different frame. I'm considering the same set-up myself.  just have to find the right truck.

Thanks for the info.

I kinda figured the kit wouldn't work on a sport because of the width, but I was hoping it could be modified or soemthing.....dangit. Oh well I guess I'd just be losing the 1.8 liter.

The chassis rails are 60mm further apart on the Sport model. It shouldn't be too hard for TT to adapt the kit to suit. I could send you a pic of the chassis from the FSM if you want.

As for gearing with the 5.71's for the 33's, it should be pretty good. I don't know what your Sport has in the diffs but over here the manuals got 4.65's and the autos 4.875's compared to the 1.6 5.125's for both trans.

I'd definitely like to know if TT can make it work for the Sport, it's in thioer best interest to broaden thier market.

As I get closer, I will contact them to see if this could be possible. I imagine this could effect everything....panhard, bracketry, what else?

5.71 is as low as you can go with yota axles.  what tire would this bring back to stock? 31's, 32's, 33's?

I know on my 4runner, 4.88's brings 33's as close to stock as possible.

I guess I could figure this out if I knew the height of the stock tire on a kick.

33 divided by stock kick tire height multiplied by stock kick gearing = ideal gearing.

So what is the stock height? 27 28?
