American Suzuki names sales chief

LOS ANGELES -- Gary Akin was named vice president of sales for American Suzuki Motor Corp. He replaces Tom Carney, who resigned Oct. 31.

Akin, 49, will oversee Suzuki's entire sales operation. He joins Suzuki from Volkswagen of America, where he headed Western region operations.

Suzuki sold 100,900 vehicles in the United States last year, the first time it has sold more than 100,000 units here. Sales in January were 8,179, up 13.4 percent from January 2006.
