Warn manual hubs - good stuff
« on: December 02, 2006, 07:31:05 AM »
Hey guys.  Been away for a while.  I wish I could say I was busy with the new toy but nope, mostly work, college, and life in general.

A while back we went to use the GV to tow my parts Tracker across the yard and when in 4x4 only the rears would spin.  Turns out the Aisin manual hubs I had installed on it are dead.  Haven't taken them apart but they aren't working correctly.  I ordered a set of Warn hubs from RockyRoad and have received them and installed them a while back.

I've heard people say that the Aisin hubs might be stronger.  I can't qualify that statement but these Warn hubs are a heavy peice of metal and seem fairly stout from my initial observations.  They do stick out a bit farther than the Aisins but they do not protrude out farther than the tires' sidewalls do.
I really like the dials on these Warns.  The Aisins, when properly greased and in good condition, are easy enough to turn but even the short 1/4 turn or so they have was troublesome for my wife.  These Warns require near a full turn around but the big, deep dial allows my wife to lock them in with no trouble.
One feature I REALLY like is the o-ring seal.  No gasket and no RTV needed.  The o-ring seal sits around the SIDES of the base of the hub so that even pushing the hubs in to start the six mounting bolts can be troublesome.  I don't worry about these leaking.

Just some observations and recommendations.  If you guys need hubs and can't/won't rebuild yours or can't find a good set of the Aisin hubs I highly recommend these Warn hubs.  Good stuff.

Yup....I've got the WARNs as well.  They're sitting in my house until I get them installed this week.  Can't wait to stop those front axles from spinning.  My diff is leaking, and my CV boots are looking like they are starting to crack.  These WARN hubs should buy me a little more time until I can get the 5.13 Sidekick diffs and new axles put on.  One more thing you forgot to mention....they're also very good looking (style points count too, you know ;)

1999 Grand Vitara w/CALMINI Suspension and RRO Body Lift, 31" Goodyear MTR tires, Skidplates, 5.12 Diffs with a Lock-Right in the rear.

I have ordered them as well.  I had my whole front diff assembly and right output shaft replaced under 1/2 warranty after 3 years.  Hopefully this will prevent another failure before I sell the GV.

Also, should improve mileage (60km a day on freeway), and reduce wear on the cv joints.

Don't expect to see much of an improvement in mpg.  We didn't, however you see far more highway travel than we do so you might.  It definitely will decrease wear in the front end's outer bits.
