Which manual gearbox is fitted to the V6?  Is it the standard Vitara box with different ratios, or is it a different box altogether?  ???

It is different than the 4 cylinder transmission.

Hey. Bryan...are you replacing your auto for a stick box? I would have to ask why. I just ran two level 4 trails ( Hells Revenge and Poison Spider )at Moab with my automatic, v6, two door Vitara and was very pleased with the performance of the auto. I also own stick box Samuris and the auto has real advantages over the standard gear box set-up.

Considering replacing a manual 1.6 with a v6 - wondered if the V6 uses the same gearbox as the 4 or not?

I agree with Eric. The 1.6 tranny is different than the v6. I don't know if it is possible to mate the two.  In any case the v6 is not cheap. Go the extra money for the auto and be sure to get the power button and over drive setup. My Vitara is a 2000 2door that had a 2.0 v6 donated from a 4door Vitara. The install was done by Cal-mini and per Steve Kramer, they had a very hard time getting the v6 to fire up because there are 4 security shut offs in the wiring loom that have to be hooked up before the motor will start. If you do go for the v6 be sure to get the entire wiring loom. Go to calmini.com and shoot them a tec inquiry for their input.

I though that truck had a 2.5 or 2.7 installed seeing as how the 2.0 V6 was/is not available in the US.

You are correct...The Calmini Vit has the  2.5 v6.   I miss typed it and posted,  without checking what  I wrote... Dumb mistake on my part.  Sorry for the confusion...

21,00 miles on it now and still runs like a scalded dog.  No problems so far except that the rear proto limited slip is getting noisy. It has started clacking on take off ( no noise from the front ) and I'm not sure whether it is just the nature of the beast or there is a problem. Everything seems to work normally. I have changed the fluid and additive. In any case , I will be changing to an ARB air locker in thr rear soon....Gary
