Pinion torque setting

Pinion torque setting

Hi guys after replacing my pinion bearings I have come to the point where i need to set my preload by torqueing the back nut .

Would anyone know what the torque setting should be , its now night time here so the dealer is shut and i wanted to finish off this evening any info would be great

Did you get your new crush sleeve ?
The torque required to crush the new
sleeve is about 300-400, once it's started
the torque required drops off.

The torque spec is like 10-12 Oz Inches on the
bearings, but that is the turning force after
the pinion nut is torqued

well that is actualy a hard question.

here is what the service manual says...

preload of pinion with an inch pound torque wrench

composite pre-load of pinion bearing and side bearing and compare to values in chart (figure 34).  Example: when pre-load of both pinions is 2.6 kg/cm (5.73 lb. in.), and acceptable composite pre-load of both pinion bearings and side bearngs is 2.8 to 3.2 kg/cm (6.12 to 7.05 lb. in).

the chart is pretty detailed.  if you tell me what your pre-load of both pinions is (value from 1.8 to 3.4 kg/cm) i can tell you what the composit pre-load should be.  but you would have to wait till i get home from work tomorrow nitht :-/  hope that helps.

yeah i have fitted the new crush sleeve and I had a thought it wasnt a case of a start and end torque.

I have a guide to what it should feel like.  I have a guy to call up that is going to explain .

if i get stuck i will try work it out and get back to you

The big pain with new gears is the
new crush sleeve, I use the old sleeve
to set the pinion depth and when thats
right, use the new sleeve, this whole process
can take from 1 to 10 tries to get the pinion
depth correct, but once it's set, the new
sleeve will crush down and you set the
rotating force torque

cheers for your replys its seems that its not something you can follow out of a book , it seems to rely on the feel of it too as some may want a little more than others.

I didnt get around to finishing it last night but i will do tonight as I want to fit the axle back in sat morning and wire in my compressor and air lines
