Fuel sending unit/fuel gauge problems
« on: November 06, 2005, 05:17:10 PM »
Gday all,

I'm having a problem with my fuel gauge.  I have just bought a 1993 Suzuki Sierra and when i fill up the tank the fuel gauge goes below the emty line.  Then as i use the petrol it comes back up to about the half tank mark before it goes down again.  This makes it very confusing for me.

How do i fix this problem?  Is it simple to fix?  What do i need to fix it?
If anyboby has any diagrams they would also be very helpfull to me.

Cheers all, Gavin

Usually the ground wire at the sending unit, common problem, may be broken but usually is just corroded.

Do Trackers/Sidekicks/Escudos/etc do this and would it also possibly cause the fuel guage to stick to full?

The wiring for the sending unit goes through a large junction plug located behind the left tail light. This plug junction is prone to corrosion and could cause the type of problem you are describing. There is also a ground junction in the same spot that you can check, too...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Can anyone tell me if the junction plug is located on the same side for the Australian suzuki?  And is the left hand side looking from the back or the front of the car.  I have had a look and was only ablo to find 1 wire coming from my sierra.  am i right in assuming this also carrys the earth back to the juction box or is it earthed from the sending unit to the tank itself?

Cheers, Gav
