Rear light wiring - Brake/Turn Signal - Samurai
« on: December 06, 2005, 02:44:44 PM »
Before I build a bumper next week for the back end of my Samurai, I want to make sure I've got enough lights to take care of everything I need.

While looking at the factory wiring, I came up with the following:

Reverse Light : Red Power / Black Ground
Running/Brake Light: Red Power / Black Ground / Green & Yellow for BRAKE LIGHT
Turn Signal: Green & White / Black Ground

My question is this: I want to have only two lights on each side of my bumper, a red and a white.

I want the white to be JUST a reverse light. No problems with this one.

I want the red to act as a running light, brake light, AND blinker.

How can I do this?

If I run the Green & White (blink) and the Green & Yellow (Brake) together, the blinker will work, but ONLY if I am not using my brakes.

Is there a simple way around this without buying a different light? My current light has a 3 wire plug, which wont allow a blinker and a brake unless they are combined.

I'm thinking that I could modify the light by adding another bulb/socket. Any easier ways I am over looking?

Thanks
Shawn

You need to purchase a trailer wiring converter.  It is put into your harness and converts the wiring to work with single trailer lights that share brake/running lights/turn signal.  Should only be a few bucks and available at any auto parts place.

I tried this on my truck and it didn't work. it seems that it could not process the hazzard flashers, they would not blink. this was a kit from a trailer shop so I don't know if they are all like that.       ??? I ended up getting two small yellow lights that are for turn signals only. the stop and brake are no problem though.

Yep.  What Ian sez.

I installed a trailer converter that worked with my three-wire (plus ground) trailer.  Walmart fer sure, but if you have bad feelings about them almost any autro parts store should have a universal kit.  Connect it up and drive your tail/turn/brake lights on the bumper from it.
