front locker vitara
« on: November 14, 2005, 04:18:58 AM »
Hi,

Maybe i will welded my front diff to make a homemade locker. But witch parts i must welded??? And riding on the road, it's that a problem when you put your wheellockers on FREE? It think it's not a problem. Have somebody here some kind of pictures about a welded front diff of a vitara? And off road, is it a lot of better than a stock diff? Original air lockers are to expensive for me.

Greats, de Ploeteraar

Welded front will make turning in 4WD hard,
the front will still go straight in slippery conditions.

To weld the diff you have to take it apart and put
welds where the spider gears and side gears meet.

I would look into an ARB or a Limited Slip from
Calmini, about $450 USD where an ARB is $700

I had a lockrite put in my front and you feel it trying to straighten out when in 4wd, but not too bad. It also hardly ever ratchets so I expect a welded would feel about the same.

If the hubs are free, the wheels are disconnected from the drivetrain so doesn't matter what's done to the diff.

I wouldn't do it, mines got the front arb and some times I have to unlock it just to get it to turn, you'd be stuffed if you can't unlock it !

I can feel the strain on the front drive line through the steering wheel when the locker is engaged and only use it when absolute necessary as it prone to causing more grief like broken axles, blown C/Vs and alloy housings won't like it ether!

Take the advice above and buy some form of locker if you must have one.
