Explaine how you hammered to get the CV
apart, I know there is a snap clip in there,  but
I can't get them apart, been trying to figure
how I could use a press, but a press pushes,
not pulls, which is what is needed here

No snap clip in mine, I looked at the Chilton's and it said a snap clip indeed but I just started tapping nicely on it and it came apart pretty easy  ???. So there was none  ;) Maybe the manual is wrong but I couldn't find it (no groove for it either).
Press should be used to insert the shaft into them, because it has more even pressure less chance of damaging it.
But I've poked around in it with a screwdriver after they came apart and there IS a groove in the CV itself, so there should be but it isn't  ???
And now I'm looking closer to the drawing in Chilton's and the outer CV's (the ones at the wheel) don't have a C-clip on them. The other side however does have m in. But I think that would be able to come apart too. I'll try to get the pic on the comp big enoug to see...
Sorry for the long post but I was thinking and looking and typing at the same time  ;)

I can't see that CV joint very clearly because of the gease. Is it bigger? if so roughly how much bigger?

Well you know the stub side of a front
diff, it has a little clip to keep the axle
stub shaft in the side gear, I was thinking
the outer CVs had the same sort of clip
to keep the axle shaft in the CV, that and
there has to be a way to assemble the thing

100% correct - move to the top of the class please  ;D

I hold the shaft in the vise the hit the back of the cv with a soft face hammer, some times the clip is reusable afterward and others it not so be careful.

Occasionaly the clip pops into the cv and hids in the grease so make sure you check youv'e taken it out before reasembling it.

Of couse if youv'e blown the CV to bits it much easier to change  :-[

Thanks Mud, I thought as much.

I've never blown an outer CV, just
the cage on 1 inner  ;)  so much for
blowing CVs with a 3" suspension lift

I've broke a bucket full of inners when I had the standard tranny in there but never an outer. Now that I have the auto tranny I haven't broke one. Auto tranny=Poor mans gearing ;D

I think the auto trans applies smooth power,
not the snapping as with a clutch, I just shattered
the cage, I could of fixed that on the trail with a new
cage (I carry a spare now)
