Tires
« on: September 29, 2005, 10:57:12 AM »
How tall are 215 75 r15?
and what do you all think of these tires.
http://www.tirepackage.com/detail.asp?type=sys&id=230&prodlineid=31&make=15%20Inch%20Rim%20Size&partNumber=SSTS-211

they are only 29"  do you think they would rub at stock height, if i put them on a set of old willys rims? 5' back spaceing i believe.

My reference says 215/75R15 tires are 27.8 inches tall, 8.15 inches wide, with 5.8 inch tread width.

Those tires look pretty good, but I wonder about a couple of things.  They are 4-ply.  I have found 6-ply rating necessary for my previous 4x4s.  They were all heavier than Suzukis, so maybe 4-ply is ok here.  Another thing is the width.  In an earlier post someone said that 235/75R15s were the maximum size for a stock 4-dr.  That works out to about 28.9 inch diameter, 9.12 inch width and 6.36 inch tread.  Maybe you can figure out whether the different offset will make these work for you.

with a small body lift they should fit. don't worry about the 4 ply rating they are swamper sx's super tough. They are bias plys and will ride extremely rough and loud on the road just to let you know.

Get some custom offset rims or wheel spacers to get the tires away from the frame. the 5" back spacing willies rims are the wrong way. Also you can use an 8" or a 7" rim with those tires.

I need to get new tires and was looking at getting a set of snow tires, but for the price. and i have an oldd set of willies wheels, i have been looking at the swampers or the BFG mud terrins KM

The BFG in a 29" would be 9.5 wide.  and they have a nice agresive tread but would not be as loud, this bieng my DD, its getting kinda harry with the A/T tires i have "almost bald" and the rocks/roots/trees lol on the paths I run are chewing the sidewalls up pretty good on the front.
I am not really into extreem 4x4, not enough time, but i get in some situations were  more traction is necessary.  and its getting a lift and lockers when money will alow, but tires cannot wait.

what lift (if any) do you have?
My opinion would be ... find some 15x7 rims from a furd, put on 30x9.50 BFG MT's, and just drive easy till you can finish a lift to avoid rubbing. On road, you can get by with tires that WILL rub when fully cocked or stuffed.

(I managed to get cocked and stuffed into the same sentance :) )

I had 29" sx's on my 88.5 with only 1" of shackle lift and had some rubbing.  2" of lift should be enough to clear them fine.  They were on some cheapo 15x7" rims that came w/ the truck (Alot less than 5" backspacing and i still rubbed a little on the leaf springs at full lock). Great tires though.  LOTS of off-road grip.  I'd recommend saving some more $$$ and go with 30" sx's w/ a 3" spring lift or SPOA.  Fairly cheap but very effective

SPOA would be great but its IFS :-\

Im going to go with 29 MT's and the extra wheels I have  payed $20 for them tires are going to be about $500, mounted and balanced, "im gona paint the wheels first"
t
he top is gona be $60 after shipping "stupid f*c*e*s that riped out the window >:("

preformance muffler $60+ 15 to install "stupid little F****r in the honda that rear ended me, broke the muffler and drove off >:(" but the little loop in the back of the kik went through his radiator  ;D ;D and the front of his ricer was beet to shit and it only bent my rock guard a little by the gass tank"

$15 in bondo for the verry corner of the fender "humm tree  ::)"

you will hate the SX's for daily driving. they get flat spots over night and will feel like a paint shaker in the morning! If you don't do hardcore 4x4in then stick to the BFG MT's. If you get into hardcore stuff you will want bigger tires anyways!

I know this has been done a hundred times but what the heck why not again?  I run 235X15 AT types on my stock alloy wheels which are 5.5" wide with standard backspace, and they are rock solid.  True diameter around 28.5", There have been a great number of posters who have done the same with good results.  I have worked mine pretty hard and never broke bead or popped them loose.  I got slight rubbing on one side until I did the 1" spring lift kit now no rubbing.  I could go another 2" diameter on the tires and still not rub much or add my 2" body lift and probably be OK and still use the stock wheels.  So consider going at least with 235s and no need to worry about wider rims.

By the way my pic is without any lift to give you an idea of how much room there is for 235s
