89my suzuki samurai high idle when cold

Hi All,

New to this so please bare with me I screw anything up  ;D

I have an 89 sammy 1.3 which I use on and off road, problem is when the vehicle is cold or even if it's been left for 1/2 an hour,  the engine races to about 2000 rpm (no rev counter, so I'm guessing) and only gradually drops as the engine warms up. This can take 15 - 20 mins depending on driving conditions.

Any idea's on how to fix this would be greatly appriciated ?...... most people suggest scrap the carb and fit an SU, but surly there must be a way to fix this carb, it starts first time and runs perfectly other than this issue.  ::)   ::)   ::)

Is this a Samurai built for the US? If so, the carburator has two adjustments for idle, the cold or idle up circuit which is adjusted at the back of the carburator next to the cable pull for the throttle and is often mistaken for the warm idle setting. The warm idle adjustment is at the back and lower part of the carburator and is directly to the right of where the throttle cable is attached to the carburator. You may have to move a couple of vacuum lines out of the way to see it. This is the adjustment for warm idle.

There is also an 'idle up' or 'accessory on' vacuum plunger that is at the back of the carburator next to the high idle that acutates and idles the engine up whenever there is an electric load like headlights or heater. Make sure it is adjusted correctly which means that with the engine warm and idling at 650 rpms you turn on your heater and the idle will jump to 800 rpm or so. Many people disable this by adjusting it 'out of the way' so it has no effect on idle. This is up to you.

ya your fast idle could be high, but sammys are supposed to do rev like that, when there cold, 2000 is fine as it warms up.   Its normal, but if you wish to adjust it lower thats fine too.  Mine ran higher than 2000rpm until warm now its around 2000.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll take that info away and try some of your suggestions.

Ref your question, I'm not sure whether it's one built for the US or not, we've owned it for the past 9 yrs but it's been in the garage for 5 of those. Decided to get it out for some green laning with my freind's and believe it or not it passed the MOT first time.  This is it's only issue, it revs so high it's difficult to drive when cold cause it runs away with you.  I believe it to be a Japanese import as it has 2 reversing lights, and a bolt on aftermarket fog lamp.

mine revs to 3k whwn cold, and idles at 1300k

Hey 93, are you running a weber too? Mine high idles cold and doesn't run smooth unless it's around 1300 warm I'm waiting for the cold weather to see if setting the cold idle adjusment will have any effect on this. I just can't seem to figure it out. Adam

Check the VIN, jsa = Japanese, vsa = Spanish.
