axle swap or not?
« on: August 28, 2005, 09:04:24 AM »
for you guys running with stock sammy axles and 31's through 33's, when you guys go wheeling what type of terrain do you cover? rocks, mud, trail riding?  and what type of breakage.  i am undecided of which way to go with my axles. i have toys here that need rebuilt, but i also have 5.13 gears with lock-rights and a hybrid rear here. just wondering if i should go with the stock axles with the 5.13's or build the toys.

very nice, what lockers/ gearing do you have in the toys. i am looking inot either 5.29 or 5.71 with spooled rear and detroit front.  also nice touch with the music, is that strangers with candy? or their later known name lifer, now breaking benjamin.

Do you need to build either option or is the 5.13 and locker already up and running? If so, do that WHILE you rebuild the toys... ;)
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

thanx... thats lifer playin. gears are 5.29's I heard and have seen too many nightmares with 5.71's being too weak and have seen it first hand. the rear is welded and the front has a lockright. Highsteer front and toyota steering IFS setup going in right now.

I Went with the Toys on mine. 33" Super Swamper TSL's.    In the long run I think it was a better choice.  I run Rocks, hills... etc.  it ended up being more stable on side hils with the extra witdh.  I have a GRS 2 T case (4.89 gearing) with the stock 4.10 gears in the toys.  With a weber carb, header I can get 55 mph still, just barely.  Lockers I am running a Detroit in the rear with a lock rite in front.  I plan on going to 4.88 gears in the future.

There is a good info on Pirate in the Toy axle Swap Faq.

It isn't cheap when you start adding up rebuilding the toy axles and such, but in the end you have a bullet proof rig you don't have to worry about.    The IFS steering is the correct combo with the histeer arms.  I am running a Tracker box and I do not get full wheel lock to wheel lock steering.  It works, but I am going to do something different (IFS box I think)

i just sold my kick thirds last night  :D now to build the toys... ;)  i have a 5.8 t-case on the way and looking to run a 33" tire.  i also have seen 5.71's in person for 2 years now he's done nothing but beat the crap out of them and they've done perfectly.... so which ever i choose 5.29 or 5.71 gearing is not going to be a problem.
