strange rattling/clunking sound
« on: September 20, 2003, 04:00:13 PM »
i have an 88 sammy that makes some strange noises. it is coming from somewhere in the drivetrain. when i bought the zuk (3 months ago) the noise was just a little whinning noise kinda like a belt slipping when i chaged gears. since then i have install bigger tires and the noise has got much worse. it now sounds like gears clashing together. i put it on jack stands and though the noise was coming the transfer case. so i change it. needless to say it didnt fix it. i also pulled the rear driveshaft and drove it. noise still there. i ride with a bunch of sammy and no one has ever had this problem. can some one please help!!

If something mechanical is coming apart inside, you may be able to find the source of the racket by changing the lube in the transfer case, transmission, and both axles. Lots of pretty, shiny particles is what you don't want to see.

Take wrenches in hand and check ALL fasteners under the car. One that is only a little loose can make scary noises.

thanks for advise but i already tried that and there was nothing in the oil. heres a little more info about it . it makes is noise in any gear in 2 or 4wd at a certain rpm and when it starts if i push in the clutch and start slowing down it will keep making the noise until it comes to a stop. when going faster the noise is kinda a loud rattle and as it slows down it becomes more a clunking noise.any body got any ideas on what it might be? thanks for your help

I had an after market, read local exhaust shop
exhaust system put on, and it was hitting the frame.
At certain RPM it could get real loud, but it was a
clunking and rattly kind of sound.

Good Luck

It sounds a lot like an exhaust proplem.  I would check the exhaust for a broken hanger or any rubbed shiny spots.  Another suggestion, have you considered the clutch bearing or perhaps an object in the bell housing.  I am not as familiar with the sammys but can you disconnect the rear drive and operate the front and vice versa?  Or disconnect both and see if the noise continues.  This may narrow down the area.  Good luck, Bobby.

put your t-c in neutral and run it thru the gears.....

that way you can isolate tranny clutch and t-c ......

my problem is finding a good tranny or more correctly a tranny that will stay good{noise free}for any length 0f time.......

also another noise maker is the rear output bearing on the t-c ..................... ???
