tracker 3rd members? will it work?
« on: May 04, 2005, 03:04:38 PM »
I have an 88 sammy on 32's. I have been hearing that tracker 3rd members will fit on sammurai axles. i would like to put 2 rear tracker 3rds on my sammy 1 in front 1 in the rear for the 5.12 gears. will this work? If so how much would tracker 3rds run me at a junkyard?

You need 2 track/kick third members from the FRONT.

You need Sidekick/Tracker front third members.

Manual Transmission will have 5.12's, Automatics will have 4.63's

I have seen the diffs go at pick a part for 85.00 ea. around here we use the rear kick in the rear of a sammy with a hybred housing(center section of kick welded in,in place of the stock one,the kick is larger.)and the front ring and pinion from the kick into the front carrier of the sammy, hope that helps.

ok im kinda confused let me get this straight. the actual housings wont fit into my axles so i need to take the diff gear assemblys and place them into my axle housings? is this right ? if not tell me all the parts I would need to get  the 5.12s into my sammy(preferably the cheapest way 2 but still durable) Thanks

just call up Brent at trailtough.  he'll give you the entire low down on the swap and he's got to be the nicest vendor in the suzuki world,  great prices too!

Ok here's the full details.  As already stated only the front third members will work.  The rear tracker thirds are 26 spline which match the samurais rear axle but the third member itself is too large to fit into the samurai housing.

Front:
The cheapest way the front tracker third is a direct bolt in to the front of a sammy.  They both use 22 spline side gears (at least the early trackers did).  The only problem is that it is an aluminum third housing so if you are planning on adding a locker there could be a problem with breakage.  You can also take the ring and pinion gears and put them into the cast sammy third housing for more strength but you will need to use a can and spacer that is available from most suzuki suppliers.  This is because the tracker ring gear is a little thinner (the spacer makes up for this) and has a larger inside opening which allows the cross shaft to come out of the samurai carrier (the can is used to hold it in).  If you want to get technical you can also probably use the entire tracker carrier and put it in the samurai third housing thus avoiding the need for the can and spacer but I believe it is a 2 pin design which may cause problems with locker selection.

Rear:
The 22 spline tracker front third will not bolt directly into the sammy rear axle which has 26 splines.  You would need to swap the side gears in the tracker third with the sammys side gears.  The only problem is that again it is aluminum and it was designed for front end use and I have heard of oiling problems when used continually in a rear application.  Therefore you should probably use the ring and pinion and put them into the samurai third member housing.

When I did mine I just used the ring and pinions from the tracker and used can and spacers to put them into the samurai thirds front and rear.
