95 tracker to 89 sidkick motor swap

95 tracker to 89 sidkick motor swap

I bought a 95 tracker with a good body, Great motor, but the tranny is wining and has metal flakes in it, and its a hard top,
it is a 5SPD

when I bought it i was looking for a soft top but considering i am trading Networking work for the rig the price was right.

So i bought an 89 sidekick XJ softtop with a bad motor but a rebuilt tranny,  1"lift and more agressive tires for $500 with 1 small dent in the body.

My question is does anyone know if i am going to run in to any problembs droping the 16V  out of the tracker in place of the 8V in the sidekick, its the same tranny from 89 - 98

should I take the electronics from the tracker? and will the hedder on the 8V bolt onto the 16V?

Also i am looking for a Locker and about 3" of lift,  and plan to snorkel it and water proof it up to the windows,

Why do you want to change the motor when you can just change the trannie??  For the softtop?  Anyway Ive never seen an 89 interior but if it looks the same as the 95 its a pretty straight forward swap.  You do need to pull the entire wiring harness out of your donor including the instrument cluster.

and yes I want the soft top, the interior of the 89 is almost identical to the tracker, the body is identical cept the sidekick is a soft top. and the tracker is kind of burpel "blue-purple" and the sidekick is dark blue.

When I did mine I took everything that I could off from my donor and just swapped it all in.  The only place I know of you might have an issue is with the harness running to the rear of the vehicle but if your feeling really ambitious I guess you could just change that one out too.  I left mine in and just changed the connector.

You might be able to make things really simple by just swapping the entire dash over that way you wont have to mess with all that wiring.  Be aware of the Heater fan wiring I have seen a couple different swiches that may need to be rewired to work right.

Yes thats correct.  I believe the harness that is on the engine will unplug from the underhood harness so you dont have to undo every little wiget.  You will need to pull the entire underhood harness the firewall harness and the dash also has its own harness but if you can change the entire dash that ones easy.  All of the connectors were different so its pretty hard loose track of where wires go.  Also if your 95 has an airbag you might want to swap that over too.

kk i will go and look, i have to wait to start my motor swap until june  :'( that is when i can get the clutch.  but maby i will get a draw and do it sonner lol but i have to finish putting the front end of the SUB back together, Broke the ring geer, and the ring geer housing, and the spider geers. in the front diff,

so im a put it back together with out the axel shafts as a 2WD and it can become a pavment princess and the sidkick can become the offroad rig.  i will post PICS of my rigs probly  tommorow.
