DETROIT -- Suzuki Motor Corp. will recall 196,876 SUVs to fix an accelerator cable that can stick, the U.S. vehicle safety regulator said.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Suzuki will recall Grand Vitara SUVs built between the 1999 and 2004 model years, as well as XL-7 SUVs built between model years 2001 and 2004.
NHTSA said the accelerator cable on the vehicles was protected by a plastic cap that could crack, causing the cable to fray and possibly stick. If that happened, NHTSA said, a driver could lose control of a vehicle's speed.
The recall was filed with NHTSA earlier this month. Suzuki told NHTSA it would notify customers of the problem and give directions for getting a free repair in January.
In addition to the accelerator cable, Suzuki will conduct another recall on 20,580 Grand Vitaras and XL-7s from the 2003 model year to fix an ignition wiring problem that could cause the engine to stall.
