Transfer Case Spline Count
« on: December 30, 2003, 02:05:50 PM »
Do anyone know about the spline count on different transfer cases?

I have a 96 Geo with a spline count of 16.  I know the older ones has a 27 spline.

I got into an argument with a guy one day about it.  I finally had to pull out my extra drive shaft and show him.  I left him speechless and it's hard to do that to this guy!!!

I wounder why they went to a lower count when everthing in the drive train got bigger?

Both front and rear drive shaft spares I have, have got 26
splines on them, they do however have 2 missing teeth,
(factory) I'm not sure why, but I was messing around one day
and stuck the slip yoke onto the splines of one of my old front
half shafts, perfect fit.

When you have the same size shafts, a larger count will give you a stronger shaft.  The splines are smaller so that gives the shaft a larger diameter.

Why change it??
