Newbie 04 4dr Vitara V6
« on: September 07, 2020, 09:26:04 AM »
I want to get my feet wet in the 4X world but don’t want to give up too much as it will be mostly a daily and maybe %10 off roader and RV toad. Should I leave it at 29 or 30inch? This question would determine if I should go 15 or 16 on wheel size. And will a 8 inch wide wheel with “0” offset definitely rid any rubbing issues? Clearance of brake calipers? Thanks

There's a heck of a lot more to be factored into the tire size decision process.

The first thing I'm going to tell you is that you can get both 29 & 30 inch (or the equivalent of) tires to fit both 15 & 16 inch rims - so, at least for me, the one decision does not affect the other..

Second, you say you have an 04, four door Vitara with a V6 - are you sure that is an accurate description?  There can't have been many 04 V6 Vitaras sold, if any, if it is an 04 with a V6 engine, it's a lot more likely to be a Grand Vitara, not that it really matters, either way, you're going to be looking at a 16 inch rim - 15 inchers won't clear the front brakes.  If, on the other hand, it is a Vitara with one of the smaller engines, it might have smaller brakes, and you might be able to use a 15" rim.

Continuing with the rim size discussion, I seriously doubt that a 16x8 rim with 0 offset will be usable with either a 29 or 30 inch tire - in front, I would expect it to foul the frame on full lock, the back edge of the front bumper and possibly a few other places, at the back, it's also going to foul the arches as soon as you start to load the vehicle - this statement assumes no lift, because you have not mentioned one - some of it will also hold true even if you do have a lift.

Last but not least - you're going from a 27 inch tire to a 29 or 30 - with that much of an increase you can also expect to have to look at new axle gears, not very easy to find, and also quite expensive, both to acquire and install.

Thanks for the input, you’re pretty sharp on Suzuki/Chevy differences. It is a Tracker with V6 and obviously I’m new at this. What could you suggest that I do tire size wise if I’m just going off the pavement once in awhile? Should I stick close to stock size with a on/off road allterrain? Being a Chevy too it has the ugly positive offset wheels so hidden within the fenders. Id like to give it a little stance to look somewhat purposefull. I didn’t know that going 2 inch bigger in tire size would take a beefier CV axle as well. Thought these were sturdy enough and ready for increases in height. Thanks

V6 Trackers use smaller brakes than their Grand Vitara counterparts, so 15 inch rims do fit, and that is what they are supplied with.

Whether or not you need a larger tire to go off road is going to be dependent on the terrain you're driving, and if it's going to be just once in a while, and the vehicle is going to be daily driven, you're probably better off staying close to stock.  Larger tires impact acceleration, fuel consumption and braking.

Stock size on a Tracker would be 205/75R15, you would probably be safe with a 225/75R15 - you can go larger but you're going to have to start considering lifting the vehicle, changing the ring & pinion gears, and when you get that far in, yes, drive line strength will become a problem.

So in lifting the front end I understand to do it proper one would need to either slot the top hole on strut or install a Camber bolt. For a min 2 in lift do I only need one bolt per side for the top?

Whether or not you will need camber correction, and how much camber correction you will need will depend on how you lift and how much you lift, I would strongly recommend you use camber bolts rather than "slotting" struts.

For a two inch lift one camber bolt per side should be adequate.
