possible carb rebuild
« on: February 04, 2004, 08:33:36 AM »
Hey gang!  Anyone done a rebuild on thier carburetor?  I believe the 2bbl on my sammy is in need.  It acts like an accelerator pump problem...stumbles just off idle.  Replaced coil (accel super stock), increased plug gap to .040", checked timing...yeah right!  The plug was missing for my bell housing, therefore the flywheel is rusty, and I can't find the timing marks.  But since this problem just started I don't think that's it.

TIA

Vacuum leak? How's the idle?

Eric, idle smooth, vacuum strong |removethispart|@ 20...no leaks, I've checked that.  I've checked everything I can think of that's obvious.  There's something wrong with a carb that has as many wires as a TBI (;))

I went through the same problem. In my case it was the accelerator pump. I got a kit from Napa for about $25. The old pump was hard as a rock and showed signs of leaking. I ended up going through the whole carb and learned a little about in the process which helps in the future with diagnostics. The hardest part of the whole job is getting to those four little 12mm nuts that bolt the carb to the intake. When you pull it apart make sure you match up the old gaskets with the new ones and put it together the way you take it apart.  Be sure to clean and blow out the passages with a little compressed air. When you get it back together you'll notice there is a float sight glass on the front of the carb which can be helpful with diagnoses.

Carb rebuild done...only took two days of spare time...DOH!  Some observations:
Read the owners manual first...this will save a ton of time.
How many stinkin jets does a tiny two barrel need?
Keep a map of the jets locations if you remove them!!!
Replace the vacuum lines!
Use the exploded view in the owners manual...not the rebuild kit...I looked for a missing jet for an hour and a half.  Then realized the damn thing wasn't there to begin with.
Wear you mechanics gloves...my hands look like they went through a meat grinder.
The rig runs great now.  But, if this is the best carb for the zuki engine, I'll be swapping in some other make of engine as soon as I get the $
