low cg crawler on yj's
« on: January 06, 2018, 10:32:04 AM »
whats up everyone, i am new to the form and was hoping to get some guidence (links to other build threads/info etc.). i am basically trying to build a spring under yj swapped samurai with double bypass shocks on all 4 corners on 31" tires at the biggest and keep it low and stable. i want to get as much articulation as possible with out steering issues. my biggest question is what to do for steering. the yj's obviously flex a lot but since i want my samurai low it seems an OTT steering wont work and the factory steering will most likely bind and limit the flex of the front axle. anyone have any info as to a solution or pictures of steering built for a low sitting samurai like this? thanks!

Nope...

I'd say some of us question if you know what you're doing, but we're too polite to say so.

The OTT (over the top) steering is designed for lifted rigs - it moves the drag link connection point up over the springs in an attempt to reduce bump steer, which is why it won't be ideal for a sprung under vehicle, it uses conventional steering ends, so I don't see it allowing any more articulation that the stock system - it's not designed to, the sole purpose is the reduction of bump steer.

If you're running spring under, you should be able to reuse the factory steering arms, but if the linkage isn't man enough then you'll just have to "re-engineer" it - I don't see it as being that complex, assuming you know what you're about.

To achieve what you have in mind you're either paying someone top dollar to do the fab work, or you have top notch fab skills yourself, either way I'd expect either you or the person doing the work to be able to put together a steering system that mounts to the knuckles using the original arms fitted with some sort of high angular displacement joint that won't bind.

I have 87 Sami with about 3.50” of lift sprung under running 31” tires and a 3” drop pitman arm and it drives great.
