1994 Geo Tracker 4x4 Barn Find
« on: January 04, 2017, 09:14:32 AM »
I recently purchased a One Owner 1994 Geo Tracker 4x4 1.6L 8V.  Soft Top,  Factory A/C, and Power Steering.  It was lady driven since new, and I even have the original window sticker.  It has very very little rust which is rare around here.  It's purple, ugh...  It's what I would call a barn find, but was not in a barn.  It sat under a carport and the the license plate says 2004, so it has not been driving in over 12 years.  The lady was too old to drive, and she would not sell it so it just sat.  After she passed, it sat because they could not get it to turn over.  I discovered it had Factory Installed "Anti-Theft".    I found the anti-theft device under the steering column and removed it and now it starts and runs on staring fluid.

Not getting fuel, so I smelled the gas tank and it was horrible.  I have removed the tank.   I ordered a new fuel pump, and fuel filter.  The old fuel pump had so much old fuel caked on it; it looked like it has been dipped in tar.

Inquiry :
1.  I need to clean out the gas tank.  Any suggestions?  I've heard vinegar works well?  Dish soap?
2.  Wondering if the Fuel Injector and Fuel Pressure Regulator are going to be toast...
3.  I'd like the gas gauge to work, but the fuel level sending unit is rusted.  Looks like a new Suzuki one is over $100.  Any aftermarket ones work?
4. I'm getting ready to order parts.  I missing anything?  (Engine stuff...  I'll deal with breaks, drive train, etc. later)
  - Gates Timing Belt Kit
  - Fan Belt &, Accessories Belt
  - Spark Plugs & Wires, Cap & Rotor
  - PCV, Air Filter, Oil Filter
  - Valve cover gasket (so I can adjust the valves)
  - Distributor o-rings
5. Guessing I should do the Water pump now, or is that easy enough to do later?
6. I'm not sure if anything leaks but guessing things are dry...  Any seals I should replace while I have it apart to replace timing belt?  How hard is it to replace Front Crankshaft seal while I'm in the area?

Thanks!

Replace the water pump and the cam & crank seals at the same time as you do the timing belt & tensioner - two reasons - the additional work involved is not that much (basically removal of the pulleys) - and - the last thing you want is one of those seals spewing oil all over the new belt.

If you leave it for later you'll essentially be doing the timing belt job twice.

Sounds good, I'll plan on doing cam and crank seals at the same time.
