1.6 Running Rough
« on: December 29, 2016, 06:46:29 AM »
Haven't been very active on here lately, but I recently brought home a 1998 tracker, 1.6, 3spd auto. It's quite a find considering it has close to zero rust, so I'm pretty excited. It ran great when I first test drove it extensively, but shortly after getting it home it started to act up. It has had a CEL on since purchase but now it's running very poorly. I checked obviously things like ignition wires for looseness, fresh gas, air filter.

I cleared the codes last Friday (when it started acting weird), and a got a p0135 in about 5 minutes, and p0740 (TTC issue, this will come after the o2 sensor) after about 2 days. It often dies when you let off the throttle after giving it light constant throttle in D or R, and wants to stall when going from D to P or N. Since then it will even stall after idling in P or N for only a few minutes.

I will also note that this poor running only happens below around 1500rpm. I have driven about 200 miles since last Friday and it cruises at 60mph like a champ (except for no TTC lockup, but we won't worry about that today). WOT and even half throttle power are both perfect and impressive considering it's a 1.6

Anyway, to get the point. I want to get rid of at least the p0135 code before I go throwing parts around. I downloaded the manual for 96 16v which is the same as mine, but I am having a hard time finding the procedure and voltage/resistance when testing the wiring going to the o2 sensor and also which wires to test (colours would be great). I want to make sure the wiring is all good before I buy and replace the sensor.

In addition to this it was suggested to me to replaces the plugs, wires and rotor cap/button as well as the PCV valve. I'm also considering doing the timing belt since I'm not sure when it was last done.

I've included a couple videos of the issue I'm having for some context.

Here it is on Friday.https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3GVw0wc8DSkMm9WUzZwSzRLR0U/view You can see how changing the gear has an effect on it. at this point it would idle for 30min straight. A few stumbles but no stalling.

Here it is on tuesday. And it's gotten worse since then, and I've stopped driving it. Exhausthttps://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3GVw0wc8DSkaTFfNmJlZmVWMFk/view?usp=sharing inside cab, crawling in 4Lhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3GVw0wc8DSkblJ5MTNtTXdzaXM/view?usp=sharing

Tried to make a short post but that never works for me, thanks for reading!
