Weird start issue...
« on: September 12, 2016, 06:02:35 PM »
So, when cold, the car starts fine. However, after it is warm and sat for a little bit, say to go into a store, I'll come back, crank it and it will sound like it might be trying to start, but just can't. The starter turns over fine, though through some of the cranks it will sometime seem as though it's hesitating or misfiring. After about 9-10 turns it will most of the time start up. Or, if I stop cranking, then start again, it will usually start up.

Thoughts:
1 - Starter - but it's cranking, there doesn't seem to be any bad noises or bad clicks. The hesitation seems to be from the engine
2 - Ignition - Could be bad time, but crank sensor, bad ignition coils. Problem: wouldn't I be feeling that throughout the drive cycle. Idling, acceleration, etc. I only get the problem when I'm starting from a warm engine and not all the time. I would say 50/50 of warm starts.
3 - Fuel pump/Fuel filter - bad fuel delivery?! But wouldn't I be feeling that one highway speed.

 Thoughts, ideas, missing something?

What's missing is the details of the vehicle ...

The 2.0 litre motors have a bit of a reputation for cam sensors failing when they are warm - your symptoms are slightly different - the test is fairly simple, place a wet rag over the sensor to cool it - it won't cost anything but your time to try it.

I did notice it happen more on hot days. Is it the whole unit that is the problem or usually just the electrical?

That question I cannot answer - I have no personal experience with the problem - there are a couple of different sensors,  my 2.0 GV uses a dual channel optical cam position sensor, and I believe the one with the heatsoak issue is a hall effect sensor.
