I have a 97 Sport and I need another transmission.  I may have to use a couple of transmissions to build one good one.  I need help from the experts on which years and models will work and can swap parts.

Can I use a bell housing from a 1.6?
What year do the manual transmissions change?
What year do the automatics change?

Any other information that you think will be helpful, I will greatly appreciate.

I have the 92 Sidekick 2D 4WD 1.6L 6-speed manual that lost 2 forward gears (don't ask how!).  I purchased a used transmission from Automatix.com online.  It came in surprisingly good and clean shape.  I was told it was the same transmission for 1992-1998 Sidekicks, at least for the 4WD manual (didn't ask about A/T or 2WD).  I ended up with a 1998 transmission, which went in with no problems and working well.  When I ordered it, they were very careful to check my VIN number for compatibility.  I'm sure all reputable online dealers do the same.  If they don't ask for your VIN - be very wary about what you'll get.  Also, most online providers will drop ship to the garage of your choice if you don't do the work yourself.  So shop around, call when you see a good price (low $500 or less) and availability, and confirm compatibility with your VIN.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Your baby Sidekick just runs so much nicer with a working transmission! :-)

Thanks DesertRAtt.

Does anyone know what is needed to convert an automatic 2WD transmission to a 4WD transmission?  Is it just the output shaft and the tail that need to be swapped?  I found a low mileage 2WD from a 2004.

I pulled the transmission ND it was just the pilot and throw out bearings that had disintegrated.

The input shaft was damaged, so I rebuilt it anyway.  I ordered a new input shaft and minimum rebuild kit.  The kit had new ball bearings and seals, but no roller bearings and synchros.

The rebuild went well, although I was originally concerned about water damage. My vent tube was no longer intact.

It was hard to shift into 5th and reverse when I first started driving, but was fine after a few miles.

Unfortunately, my AC clutch bearing gave out.  I have a new one in the way, but it will arrive while I am working in Portland.
