Factory roof rack - new to me
« on: July 12, 2015, 03:24:04 PM »
Well, I finally found a factory roof rack.  It isn't perfect, but it is in good shape for something that has been on the top of a vehicle for 18 years.  Now if I can find a Shrockworks bumper....

Looks damned good to me.  That's a very clean looking truck you have as well.

repaint it with some undercoating or something rubberized.  I used to get black smudge whenever I grabbed onto mine but the rubberized took care of it.  Plus it looks better and if you wanted to customize it in any way you could do that as well.

I know.  Buster is looking REALLY tired too.  His paint faded on the top and now is fading on the drivers side front fender.  The plastic trim inside is getting brittle... but I'm like you.  I try to keep him up.  I still intend to either spray or brush Monsta Liner on him.  Yeah, the finish will be rough, but it would be be a good finish to protect the metal and he'd look a 100% better than he does now.  Besides, I am under no illusion that anyone, beside us Zuki type sickos, would even be interested in him if I were to ever put him up on the market for sale.  That said, I do have a guy who owns a jewelry store who offers to buy Buster every time I stop by his shop.  He has a couple Trackers for down on his farm that he keeps there to drive on the property when he goes down. He loves these trucks too.  I've sold him parts, tires and rims, etc, for years.  A really great guy.

OBTW, Last Friday I went and test drove a 2004 Jeep Rubicon.  Was contemplating buying it.  2.5" lift, just over a 100K miles, 5 speed, with BFG mud terrains and a hard and soft top with it.  It rode and tracked fine on the highway... but when I took it down some of the local country roads with chuck holes it nearly drove my fillings out of my teeth.  I think he had way too much pressure in the MTs.

It was very clean and appears to have been well maintained for the year.  No body rust on the upper body and just a little on the under body pan. The frame was clean enough with no rust through.  Suspension was tight except for the rear driver's side control arm having just a little side-to-side play in it and needing tightened.   Anyway, I thought hard on it for a few days and decided not to buy it.  I have found another Rubicon that I am looking into now.  They just don't make them like they did before 2007.  They didn't have ABS as an "option" and they were easy to work on.  Now everything is computer driven, to include sensors for the position of the steering wheel!  Really?  Why?  That just sucks.

Rjkick, the plan is to paint it with Plasti-Dip. The pictures were just a test fit.  I have to clean the threads on one of the clamp pieces, where the PO cross threaded a bolt before shipping.  I also bought new stainless hardware for most of it.  I still need to order the long bolts that clamp cross bars to their end pieces.  Those will be ss with ss nyloc nuts.

I get the most black stuff from the rubber pieces on the top of my rig.  I wish I could find some new replacements.

Nprecon, I still think about getting a new rig as well.  If I do, it will be back to a Land Cruiser.  I drove one for years in the Middle East and really enjoyed it. I don't want it to be as loaded as my previous one.  It had  memory settings for the steering wheel and seat positions.  It also had the cooler/freezer in the center console, which isn't available over here.  I guess a cooler that fits a six pack in the console would be seen as liability here.  It had a separate ac coil for it and would keep things cool in 130F heat.

The thing is, I am rarely home and don't need anything new or fancy sitting around.

I hear ya.  I do  like the older Land Cruisers too.  They were built like tanks but they were more durable than tanks.  I didn't purchase that particular Jeep anyway.  I thought long and hard on it and decided it just wasn't THE Jeep I had in mind, although it was still a fine little truck.  I ended up stumbling across an earlier model in much better shape with lower miles.  I drove up to look at it, fell in love with its pristine condition and its low miles. Several  previous owners had really taken care of this thing.  I still have Buster though.  I can't see selling him for what he is and what he can do.  Buster is still a capable little truck and he gets great fuel economy while doing it.  Buster is my primary dog hauler and do everything truck.
